Big Sean Says He Confronted Mental Health Struggles While Making ‘Detroit 2’

Big Sean opened up about his struggle with mental health before releasing his album, Detroit 2.

He took to Twitter to talk about his struggle and wrote that he had never wanted to end his life or give up on his life until the past few years. Sean continued in a series of tweets, “I didn’t realize how important it was to embrace the ups n downs of life and enjoy (in joy) taking active steps to better it. it’s the Journey!”

However, he assured his fans he currently does not feel like that. He opened up saying he always thought doing what he loved would make him happy. The rapper continued it drove him insane and confused when he felt tired of doing what made him satisfied. He said, “Later I realized I was just growing n had to gain a new mentality and foundation on many levels n re-discover my passion! And try new things.”

Sean further added that it was the hardest thing he had to do. He said he hopes and prays if it ever happens to anyone else, they hold on to their faith. The rapper said that one may discover other passions if it is meant to be. He noted, “Not sure if we are only meant to do one thing in life, who knows for sure.”

The rapper also opened up about his insecurities while he was making his latest album, Detroit 2. He explained that it worried him that it was taking too long when he was working on himself and figuring things out. Big Sean thought it was adding extra stress to his life and feared that people would not want to hear from him. However, he said, “but even then I still… I couldn’t rush it.”

“MY Timing Isn’t Everyone Else’s Timing n That’s Fine”

He said he listened to God and himself for when the time will be right. The rapper shared, “That’s one of the hardest things to do as an artist was be on my time, and not the time everyone kept telling me is right for me. I had to learn MY timing isn’t everyone else’s timing n that’s fine.”

Big Sean wrote he does not know if his album will be at number one or not but he feels like it already is for him. He explained it is because all he put into it. The rapper wrote, “what I went through to make it and the impact it’s had on some of you. I’m too grateful for that alone!”

Big Sean recently cleared the air about his 2014 hit song, “I Don’t F**k with You” (IDFWU). Which was never meant to be a “diss” track for his ex-fiance, and late actress, Naya Rivera. The rapper says he would have “never made” the profanity-laden song had he known that Rivera’s life would come to such a tragic and sudden end.

In a new interview with Vulture, published on Tuesday, the 32-year-old rapper gets asked if he regrets making “IDFWU”. It released shortly after the two called it quits. Especially since many fans associated the song with their 2014 breakup, due it’s lyrics and timing.

“That’s a tough question to answer because I’m still processing a lot of that,” Sean answered. “I don’t feel comfortable talking about it because I want to respect her. She’s made such an impact on people, and she’s done so many great things in her life and her career. It was hurtful to even have that [song] be associated with her,” Sean continued.

Sean released the song five months after his split from Rivera and two months after her marriage to Ryan Dorsey. In the song, he raps ‘I heard you got a new man/ I see you takin’ a pic / Then you post it up, thinkin’ that it’s makin’ me sick’. Seeming to reference Rivera’s quick new romance.
