Benedict Cumberbatch Improvised Hilarious Avengers: Infinity War Line

Benedict Cumberbatch had improvised one perfectly snarky Doctor Strange line in Avengers: Infinity War. The movie was the first part of the two-part conclusion of the first three phases of the MCU. All of Avengers had to assemble for MCU’s biggest threat yet, Thanos.

But all the heroes did not become best of friends right after they met. One of the best examples is the relationship between Doctor Strange and Iron Man. The two heroes did not meet until Avengers: Infinity War as Tony Stark did not take Doctor Strange very seriously. He even asked him what his job was other than making balloon animals. But both of them did agree on their common goal and they did not want to be the reason the universe lost to Thanos.

In a recent interview with THR, Benedict Cumberbatch who plays Doctor Strange revealed that he had improvised one of his character’s funniest lines. The line was in fact the response to Tony Stark’s question about his job. He had said, “It’s protecting your reality, douchebag.” Benedict admitted to having added the “douchebag” part.

The actor shared, “I remember on the set when I called him a douchebag, there was this sort of ripple effect. ‘Oh my God. Did you just call Iron Man a douchebag?’ They kept it, good for them. And then, it got the same kind of response at the cinema.” He added that he got bored of being compared to “Liberace or whatever other retorts the guy with the same camp goatee had opposite me, so I tried to knock him down.”

Benedict further shared it was fun to play with that sort of thing and find his feet. He added that the more times he does that, the more familiar it becomes. His comeback to Tony was fitting to his character and makes sense why Benedict chose to improvise which was kept in the final cut as well. The relationship of Doctor Strange and Tony Stark developed from being grudging allies to respected colleagues from Infinity War to Endgame.

Doctor Strange will continue to honour Tony’s legacy by helping Peter Parker in the upcoming, Spider-Man: No Way Home. We are yet to see how the Sorcerer Supreme will deal with the aftermath of Endgame during Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The plot of both Spider-Man and Doctor Strange has not been revealed.
