Awkwafina’s Exceptional Comedic Skill Praised By Shang-Chi Director

Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ director have recently praised Awkwafina’s comedic skills. Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced the master of Kung-Fu, Shang-Chi to the audience. The movie revolves around Shaun being forced to confront his true identity as the son of Wenwu, the leader of the Ten Rings.

This marks Marvel Studios’ first Asian lead with Simu Liu in the main role. Shang-Chi also has a predominantly Asian cast including Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Tony Leung, Meng’ er Zhang, Benedict Wong and Awkwafina. After multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Shang-Chi finally hit theatres on September 3rd.

The movie has broken box office records despite that and continues to exceed expectations. This movie has already been praised for its cultural influencer, action, heart and humour. And the latter part of it is because of Awkwafina. The actress is at the height of her game as Katy Chen, the lifelong best friend of Shang-Chi.

She plays an important role in the movie despite lacking combat experience or magical bracelets. Destin recently posted a behind-the-scenes shot on Instagram. He was seen directing Awkwafina in Shang-Chi and he praises her improvisational skills. The director also praises her ability to be a “caring, present and an intimate performer.

Her character in Shang-Chi was the source of the best jokes whether she is singing karaoke and taking sports cars for joyrides or criticizing Shaun. She is also one of the easiest comic relief characters of the MCU as she has a heartfelt and an actual arc. Shang-Chi’s Katy later picks up archery which makes her an important player in the fight against the Dweller-in-Darkness.

Shang-Chi allowed Awkwafina to shine in a movie that has managed its characters and tone. Katy basically becomes an Avenger with Shang-Chi at the end of the movie and there’s more for her in Phase 4 for sure.
