AOC Slammed For ‘TAX THE RICH’ Gown As Internet Says ‘She’s One of Them’

Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, Grimes might have gotten attention for their outfits this year at Met Gala. However, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has also managed to get everybody’s attention with her powerful message for the rich.

The Democratic congresswoman had decided to make a statement at the Met Gala carpet which is packed with millionaires. She has constantly been in the limelight for quite some time and now she is trending all over the internet. The politician was photographed at the 2021 Met Gala in her white gown which had a message at the back saying, TAX THE RICH.

Alexandria’s gown had that written on the back with giant red letters. It was designed by Brother Vellies and social media soon got into an argument regarding it. Users are still debating as to if it was the right move or not. The politician has been at the forefront of the battle for income equality for a long time.

But she got slammed by New York Times fashion director and critic Vanessa Freidman on Twitter. She was dragged by the latter after attending an event that costs $35k per ticket while conveying the message of taxing the rich. “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attending the $35,000-a-ticket #MetGala in a Brother Vellies gown blaring “Tax the Rich” is a complicated proposition.

Alexandria was with Brother Vellies on the red carpet and she spoke to host Keke Palmer. She shared that they started having a conversation about what it means to be a working woman of colour at the Met. The politician shared, “…we can’t just play along, but we need to break the fourth wall.”

But social media did not take this well as they were not having AOC sending across a message when she herself was surrounded by the richest. Users called her out on Twitter as one user pointed that she is in a party full of privileged rich people wearing gowns and suits worth tens of thousands.

They added that she is partying with them and she did not decline the invite either. Another user said, “A big fan, but seeing some contradictory messages being sent here. Maybe next time #AOC should host an alternative “Justice for All” gala. And invite The People.” One added, “To be its about performative politics, which seems to be the majority of what politicians do now a days. a lot of ppl want to tax the rich so promoting that message isnt necessarily what that policy front needs right now.”
