Angelina Jolie Calls Daughter Zahara an ‘Extraordinary African Woman’

Angelina Jolie is “in awe of” her daughter Zahara Jolie-Pitt. It is well known that Jolie keeps her life private and doesn’t often talk about her six children in detail during interviews. However, she did just that in a recent Time 100 talk with Ugandan climate activist, Vanessa Nakate. The proud mom couldn’t help but appreciate her 15-year-old daughter, Zahara Jolie-Pitt and the impact she has had on her life.

Jolie and Nakate were discussing the Black Lives Matter movement, in the video interview and Jolie prefaced Nakate’s question with a little insight about Zahara.

“She Is An Extraordinary African Woman”

“My daughter is from Ethiopia. And I have learned so much from her. She is my family, but she is an extraordinary African woman. Her connection to her country, her continent, is her own and it’s something I only stand back in awe of.” Jolie said of her daughter, whom she adopted in 2005 from Ethiopia, when Zahara was just 6 months old.

“But what I see in, for example, American history books and how limited they are. They really start teaching people who are Black about their lives through the Civil Rights movement. Which is such a horrible place to begin.”

The 45-year-old film star adopted Zahara as an infant from an orphanage in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa in 2005. In addition to Zahara, Jolie shares Maddox, 18, Pax, 16, Shiloh, 13, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 11, with ex- husband, Brad Pitt.

Talking Racism and Discrimination

Though she does not often talk about her children, the Maleficent actress recently opened up about raising her kids amid the “racism and discrimination in America.”

“A system that protects me but might not protect my daughter, or any other man, woman or child in our country based on skin color, is intolerable,” she said. “We need to progress beyond sympathy and good intentions, to laws and policies that actually address structural racism and impunity,” Jolie added. “Ending abuses in policing is just the start. It goes far beyond that, to all aspects of society, from our education system to our politics.”

‘Adoption’ and ‘orphanage’ are positive words in our home

In an interview back in June, Jolie opened up about adoption. A journey which the actress and her ex husband have personally been on three times, for Zahara, Pax and Maddox.

“Each is a beautiful way of becoming family,” said the mother of six. “What is important is to speak with openness about all of it and to share. ‘Adoption’ and ‘orphanage’ are positive words in our home. With my adopted children, I can’t speak of pregnancy. But I speak with much detail and love about the journey to find them and what it was like to look in their eyes for the first time.”

“Honor them, Learn from them”

“All adopted children come with a beautiful mystery of a world that is meeting yours,” Jolie shared. “When they are from another race and foreign land, that mystery, that gift, is so full.” The actress insisted that parents must never let their adopted kids lose touch from where they came from. “They have roots that you do not. Honor them. Learn from them. It’s the most amazing journey to share,” she said. “They are not entering your world. You are entering each other’s worlds.”

The infamous custody battle – Where do things stand now?

The legal war between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie for their kids custody has been quite infamous. However, by the looks of it, the couple has finally found comfort in Co-parenting. The former Hollywood couple, are reportedly co-parenting amicably as of now, thanks to “family therapy” four years after their bitter split.

An insider source revealed, “It’s taken them a long time, with a lot of family therapy, to get to this point,” adding that tension between the former couple has thawed. “The younger kids go back and forth between their houses, and Brad loves spending as much time with them as possible. He seems much happier.”
