Peacemaker Is A Hero Or A Villain, According To James Gunn
In The Suicide Squad and its spin-off series, James Gunn clarifies whether John Cena’s Peacemaker is considered a villain or a hero. In 1966, the first Peacemaker appeared in a comic book. Before being bought by DC Comics, the character was created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette for Charlton Comics. Peacemaker is a pacifist who is so dedicated to the cause of peace that he is willing to employ force as a superhero with a variety of non-lethal weapons.
Peacemaker will make his live-action debut in James Gunn’s highly anticipated The Suicide Squad, starring John Cena as Christopher Smith’s version of the character. Following the release of the film, Cena will reprise his role as Max in an HBO spin-off series about his origins, for which Gunn also wrote, developed, and directed many episodes.
Some are puzzled at Peacemaker’s temperament, given the team he is joining and his time in Belle Reve prison previous to the start of the movie.
Here’s The Tweet
Following the completion of the spin-off series and the upcoming release of the film, one fan took to Twitter to seek Gunn for clarification on whether Cena’s Peacemaker is a villain or a hero. Rather of saying that he is one or the other, the filmmaker went for a more philosophical approach. He explained, “Most of us aren’t actually that simple to merely be one or the other.” Below is Gunn’s response:
Peacemaker has been described as a “f*cked up superhero” by Cena, while Gunn’s tight-lipped comments about the series’ history and his destiny in The Suicide Squad have hinted at a liking for the character.
The team’s fundamental nature is to provide persons labeled wicked by society with a shot at redemption — at least for themselves, if not for the general public — and Gunn’s recent comments show his comprehension of that concept, demonstrating that he is the appropriate person to lead the project. When the DC Extended Universe sequel debuts next month, only time will tell how diverse Peacemaker’s personality is.
