Over the previous week, Lucifer season 5 has piled up over 1.8 billion minutes of streaming, once again topping Nielsen’s rankings. Lucifer is based on Neil Gaiman’s books and is a spin-off of his popular series The Sandman. Tom Ellis plays the titular fallen angel.

He decides to move to Los Angeles after becoming tired of ruling over hell, where he starts a nightclub and works as a consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department. Lauren German and Kevin Alejandro play detectives Chloe Decker and Dan Espinoza, respectively, and Lesley-Ann Brandt plays the demon Mazikeen.

Lucifer, which had its premiere on Fox, was cancelled after its third season in 2018, much to the dismay of fans. The decision to discontinue the show was based on ratings, according to the network. However, the series was picked up by Netflix later that year, so all was not lost. The current fifth season was supposed to be the final one for Lucifer, however Netflix reversed their mind and decided to renew it for a sixth and final season.

Lucifer continues to be a ratings draw for Netflix, proving Netflix’s choice to pick up the series was a wise one. According to Deadline, the show continues to dominate Nielsen’s statistics, which track how many people are watching Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Hulu on their TV screens. The show was streamed for a total of 1.8 billion minutes the following week after the second half of the fifth season was released on May 28th (May 31 to June 6). This represents a 40% increase over the show’s prior week’s 1.3 billion minutes streamed.

While the show had a difficult start, with critics mostly attacking its crime-drama structure, that appears to have changed dramatically. Seasons 2, 3, and 4 have all gotten perfect reviews from critics and fans alike, and are presently rated 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. As it approaches its final season, Lucifer has the potential to maintain its momentum in terms of ratings and critical acclaim.
