Season 2 of Lovecraft Country would have included zombies
Misha Green, the showrunner of Lovecraft Country, has previewed more of what was planned for the scrapped second season, including a zombie-infested setting. Jonathan Majors and Jurnee Smollett feature in Lovecraft Country, a horror film set in 1950s Jim Crow-era America.
The series, which premiered on HBO in August 2020, was hailed for its unusual mix of Lovecraftian horrors and the real-life horrors of racism faced by African-American communities in the United States. A second season was in the works, but HBO just announced that it had been cancelled, despite the show’s success.
Green has now revealed more facts regarding the now-cancelled second season of Lovecraft Country in his capacity as the show’s creator. Green first posted a “taste of the [Lovecraft Country] Season 2 Bible” on Twitter, naming a picture the “sovereign states of America” and displaying a map of the United States divided into four divisions.

One of those regions was the “Whitelands,” about which Green has now revealed further details, claiming that it was a territory “totally overrun by zombies,” primarily slow but with “pockets of fast-moving zombies also.” Here’s the complete tweet:
These previews for Lovecraft Country’s second season indicate that the series had a lot of potential, which makes HBO’s cancelling decision even more disappointing. It appeared to be far along in the planning stages, with Smollett and Majors apparently clearing their schedules to return to the show.
Zombies would have allowed Lovecraft Country to pay homage to more classic horror stories like George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Although the termination of Lovecraft Country was unexpected, Green is letting viewers to create the show’s extended world for themselves by releasing these previews of what could have been.
