Endgame Time Travel Questions may receive a different response from Loki
Michael Waldron, the writer of Loki, reveals how the Disney+ series’ theory for time travel differs from that of Avengers: Endgame. Everything is now coming up Loki, as Marvel’s third Disney+ series premieres on Wednesday. Loki, a complex, time-bending crime thriller that promises to be a break from the normal Marvel fare, stars Tom Hiddleston as a fan favourite MCU character. The series picks up with Loki, who escaped with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame, but it’s an older version (or, as the programme puts it, “variant”) of the character.
The answer, according to chief writer Michael Waldron, is no. Or, at the very least, not always. Before Loki’s launch, Screen Rant had the opportunity to meet down with Waldron and ask him a variety of questions about the Disney+ show. He indicated that things will be different in terms of time travel because it is being presented by a different organisation.
Time Travel
Loki’s Tesseract theft wasn’t meant to happen, thus the God of Mischief quickly finds himself in problems with the Time Variance Authority, a bureaucratic body that keeps track of the secretive Timekeepers’ chronology. Loki will, in other terms, deal with time travel.
The MCU has been down this road before, with Avengers: Endgame opening the way with its own explanation of how the idea works (not to mention the final season of Agents of SHIELD, which isn’t entirely canon these days). Because Endgame had its own set of time travel rules, one has to question if Loki will follow them.
It’s probably for the best that Loki isn’t exactly sticking to Endgame’s time travel rules. Aside from fan requests, the Disney+ series may forge its own path forward by not getting caught up in what has already been established. Some may object to the retconning, but Waldron’s explanation of Loki’s time travel as seen via the TVA is a reasonable justification for the differences. Fans will undoubtedly pore over every new rule that emerges as Loki advances. It’ll be fascinating to observe how things align – or don’t align.
