When Does Eternals Take Place In The Marvel Cinematic Universe?
With the arrival of Eternals, whose tale will span thousands of years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history is about to expand significantly. Eternals relates the narrative of a group of ancient, super-powered beings created by the Celestials (godlike cosmic entities whose ranks include Star-father, Lord’s Ego), who played a critical role in the creation of human culture. When the Earth is threatened by their corrupted opposites, the Deviants, the Eternals are called to gather in the present.
While the MCU films have mainly followed a chronological order up to this point, things will get a little more tricky in Phase 4. The events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War are placed between the events of Black Widow, the next major MCU film. Loki, a new Disney+ series, will transport its titular antihero to various points in time and space. Then there’s Eternals, which will go back far than we’ve ever seen in MCU history.
Eras of Eternals
The ancient deities will reunite after the events of Avengers: Endgame, according to the official description for Eternals and verified by Sprite’s mention to Iron Man and Captain America in the Eternals teaser. WandaVision took place three weeks after Blip, while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier took place several months after.
Because of the five-year gap between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, both Disney+ shows published so far take place in 2023, therefore the return of the Deviants in Eternals is likely to occur in 2023 or shortly thereafter.
The topic of why the Eternals didn’t help in prior crises tends to show up more regularly as more superheroes are introduced into the MCU. They, in particular, bear responsibility for missing two devastating alien attacks on New York City, the fall of Sokovia, the Battle of Wakanda, and the Battle of Earth at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
It’ll be fascinating to see which of them Thanos “snapped” out of existence, and how that affected the survivors. It’s possible that some of the Eternals may meet paths with new Avengers like Sam Wilson’s Captain America and Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor now that they’re back in action.
