Lady Gaga Will Play ‘Smelly Cat’ With Lisa Kudrow On Friends: The Reunion Special

Lady Gaga is said to be performing a rendition of the classic Phoebe Buffay song, Smelly Cat with the actress, Lisa Kudrow. This will be for the reunion of Friends that is airing on HBO Max in a few hours.

The singer was the team’s top choice according to director, Ben Winston. He revealed that he asked Lisa if she will be ready to sing it and she accepted the offer. Ben explained the idea for a collaboration of the classic song as he revealed they went through a few names. He revealed that they both agreed on Lady Gaga and if she accepted that would be the ultimate one.

Ben said, “We went through a few names, and we both agreed that Gaga, if we could get her, would be the ultimate one because she associates with and feels close to Phoebe in so many ways, as Gaga says on the show.” The director described it as a “beautiful moment” and that Lady Gaga jumped at the opportunity to do it.

Lisa’s character Phoebe is known for singing different songs that are catchy along with her acoustic guitar. While Smelly Cat is already a song we all remember, Ben revealed that Lisa and Lady Gaga had barely any time to rehearse it.

“We sat there with the two guitars with Lisa and her and worked it out there and then,” he explained. This is not the first time Lisa will be performing Smelly Cat with another celebrity singer. She has previously sung it with Taylor Swift on stage back in 2015 for the rendition on her world tour.

The Original Song Was Supposed to Be Smelly Dog

Smelly Cat was written for the character by Kudrow with Adam Chase, Betsy Borns and Chrissie Hynde. The song is reportedly created in 1995 by Friends writer Borns who actually intended the lyrics to be about a foul-smelling dog. So the original song was supposed to be Smelly Dog.

It was also revealed Wednesday that the following guests’ stars would be returning for the show, Elliott Gould and Christina Pickles (Ross and Monica’s parents, Jack and Judy) Tom Selleck (Monica’s former boyfriend Dr Richard Burke) Maggie Wheeler (Chandler Bing’s ex-girlfriend, Janice). 

Also, James Michael Tyler (Rachel’s Central Perk manager Gunther) Reese Witherspoon (Jill Green, Rachel’s younger sister) Larry Hankin (Mr Heckles, the neighbour living in the apartment under Monica) Thomas Lennon (Joey’s identical hand twin).
