Lady Gaga Performs The National Anthem As She Offers An Olive Branch
Lady Gaga brought good vibes along with her on Wednesday, January 20 as she sang the national anthem at Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration. She belted out “The Star-Spangled Banner” moments before Kamala Harris was sworn in as Vice President of the US.
The ceremony was scaled back because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, the singer gave strictly structured proceedings her signature star power. Her voice was echoing with emotion on a historic day. The Monster singer did not dial it down in any way as she made a statement with her fashion as well.
Gaga chose to wear a full red skirt and a navy wool jacket, a brooch in the shape of a dove with an olive branch in its mouth. This provided the right message for the ceremony as well. “I pray tomorrow will be a day of peace for all Americans,” Lady Gaga had tweeted Tuesday.
“A day for love, not hatred. A day for acceptance, not fear. A day for dreaming of our future joy as a country. A dream that is non-violent, a dream that provides safety for our souls. Love, from the Capitol.”
The picture’s angle shows her in a suffragette-white from head to toe as she stood inside the rotunda. The singer arrived at the Capitol today and wrote that singing the national anthem for the American people is her honor. She shared that she will sing during the ceremony which is a “moment of change”.
The Rain on Me singer wrote, “Singing our National Anthem for the American People is my honor. I will sing during a ceremony, a transition, a moment of change—between POTUS 45 and 46. For me, this has great meaning.”
‘Listen, we need you because we needed somebody that was going to bring us all together’
Gaga has been a longtime supporter of Joe Biden after meeting him during the Obama presidency. She was there to discuss the ways to combat the scourge that is sexual violence. The singer appeared at the eve of the election rally for him at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field back in November.
She told the crowd how she has known Joe for a long time and she remembers when she was hanging out with him. The singer recalled as she explained what she told him.
“I remember when I was hanging out with him one day and I was like, ‘So you’re going to run for president, right?’ And we had a little talk and he did it. But I was like, ‘Listen, we need you because we needed somebody that was going to bring us all together for this moment, this very important moment. It’s going to be clear what this country is, tomorrow.’,” she shared.
Gaga also expressed her relief when the race was called for Biden and Harris back in November. The result was followed by several days of counting around the clock in states that remained too close to call. She wrote as she addressed Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and the American people for their greatest act of kindness.
The singer expressed, “@joebiden @KamalaHarris and the American people, you just gave the world one of the greatest acts of kindness and bravery humanity has ever seen. nothing but love for our new Commander in Chief and the 1ST female VP elected to the White House. Also, way to go PA.”
‘I will intervene in situations where consent has not or cannot be given.’
Biden had introduced Gaga’s performance of Best Original Song nominee ‘Til It Happens to You‘ at the Oscars in 2016. The song is from the documentary The Hunting Ground and is about sexual assault on college campuses.
“Too many women and men…are still victims of sexual abuse,” Biden said in encouraging the audience to “take the pledge. A pledge that says, ‘I will intervene in situations where consent has not or cannot be given.’ Let’s change the culture.”
The singer never forgot the pledge that he took at the time and now she has supported Biden. Joe Biden got sworn in as the 46th president of the United States.
