Disney’s Live-Action Snow White Movie Reportedly Taps Greta Gerwig To Write
Greta Gerwig will reportedly write the adaptation of the iconic animated picture Snow White for Disney’s latest live-action version. In the last few years, Gerwig has gained a lot of attention. Lady Bird, which she wrote and directed in 2017, and Little Women; which she wrote and directed in 2019, are two of her major breakthrough works. Lady Bird and Little Women were critical successes, with Little Women receiving Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Gerwig was recently hired to create a live-action Barbie film; and she was later confirmed to be directing the picture, which will feature Margot Robbie from Birds of Prey. With Rachel Zegler in the main role and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen; Snow White has already found her starring ladies. Zegler is a rising star in the industry, with Maria in Speilberg’s West Side Story being one of her first roles.
Gadot is most recognised for her appearance in Wonder Woman as Diana Prince. Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) will helm the film; which will be produced by Marc Platt; (Dear Even Hanson, La La Land, Cruella); and Russell Allen; (Dear Even Hanson, La La Land, Cruella). Along with the popular original melodies, new songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (The Greatest Showman, Dear Evan Hansen) will be featured.
Gerwig has been hired as a writer for the film, according to The DisInsider. According to the source, Gerwig has been working on the script for some time; and has already assembled a draught for the project. Snow White is expected to begin filming early next year; with musical rehearsals beginning in January and filming beginning in March.
Disney has made no secret of their desire to turn their legendary animated flicks into live-action pictures. Since their first live-action remake, The Jungle Book, in 1994, Disney has released over a dozen live-action films and has a dozen more in the works. The films themselves have been hit or miss; because while it is simple for these films to appeal to nostalgia; they occasionally rely too heavily on nostalgia rather than presenting a compelling storey.
Disney remakes frequently strive to bring new interpretations of the film to the screen; but they often fail because they stray too far from the source material, such as Mulan in 2020. Overall, the creative team appears to be off to a strong start in making this film sparkle. Gerwig is a wonderful addition to the cast; given her screenplay for Little Women was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
She has a tremendous eye for what works in an adapted picture and how to convert something audiences have seen previously into something new; as evidenced by her work on Little Women. Snow White, like The Little Mermaid with Halle Bailey, need this training because the film had a diverse cast that sparked early scepticism. Gerwig has the capacity to create a new adaptation while keeping the elements that audiences adored.
