During the production of Netflix’s Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that the stress of writing and directing the show caused him to lose six teeth.

Squid Game has taken the world by storm in recent weeks, recently becoming Netflix’s most successful original series launch ever. Over 111 million people watched the Korean survival drama on the streaming site in its first 28 days, breaking Bridgerton’s previous record of 82 million.

Storyline of the Series

Squid Game follows a group of borrowing participants who accept invitations to compete in a series of children’s games in the hopes of winning a large cash prize. The cost of losing a game, on the other hand, can be deadly.

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series creator, writer, and director, has previously worked on films such as Silence, Miss Granny, and The Fortress, but Squid Game is his first big global success. Despite the series’ critical praise and popularity, Netflix has yet to confirm whether or not the second season of Squid Game will be produced.

Lost six teeth during the shoot

Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed the pressures of working as both writer and director for all nine episodes of the blockbuster show in a new interview with THR. This is an unusual event in today’s TV industry.

In addition to the enormous pressure of coordinating so many different areas of production, the show’s complicated story required the director to rewrite some of the scripts while filming. The stress eventually took its toll on the filmmaker’s body, and he lost six teeth during the shoot.

Typically, each episode of a series will have a different director and a small group of writers working on the scripts. The fact that Hwang Dong-hyuk took on all of this shows how unique his vision is and how determined he is to maintain the series’ continuity.

If the director decides to make a second season of Squid Game, which seems likely given how important the IP has become to Netflix, it’s unknown whether he’ll take on all of the writing and directing tasks himself.
