Netflix & Howard University Create $5.4M Chadwick Boseman Scholarship
Both Netflix and Howard University partnered together to create a $5.4 million scholarship in honour of Chadwick Boseman. The actor had passed away in August 2020 after a long and secretive battle with colon cancer.
He was best known for his performance as King T’Challa in Marvel’s Black Panther. Even after being sick, the actor continued to film projects like Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods. His final role was also for Marvel as he recorded himself for its animated series, What If..? The actor contributed his voice to nearly half of the first season’s episodes and was honoured with a tribute at the end of episode 2.
Netflix and Howard University are uniting forces to create a scholarship in the late actor’s name, as per ET Canada. As per a statement released by the university, The Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship will be providing incoming college of Fine Arts students with a 4-year, full-ride scholarship. This will be provided to one member of each class as Chadwick’s wife, Simone also helped set up the fund.
As per Howard University President Wayne A. I, Frederick, “It is with immense pleasure and deep gratitude that we announce the creation of an endowed scholarship in honour of alumnus, Chadwick Boseman, whose life and contributions to the arts continues to inspire.”
He added that this scholarship embodies Chadwick’s love for Howard, his passion for storytelling, and his willingness to support future generations of Howard students. The President continued, “I am thankful for the continuous support and partnership of Chadwick’s wife, Mrs. Simone Ledward-Boseman, and to Netflix for this important gift.”
It was also announced earlier this year that Howard’s College of Fine Arts would be renamed in Chadwick’s honour. They had revealed that the building had been renamed officially as the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts in May. However, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will surely celebrate Chadwick’s memory. The movie is set to premiere in 2022 and will pay tribute to the actor.
