Catherine’s rise to power is teased in the first look photographs for season 2 of The Great. Catherine the Great’s rise to power is recounted in Hulu’s comedy-drama, but with an anti-historical twist. Empress Catherine II is played by Elle Fanning, and Emperor Peter III is played by Nicholas Hoult.
Tony McNamara, who also wrote The Favourite and Cruella de Vil, initially intended The Great as a stage play. Season 1 received many Emmy and Golden Globe awards after premiering on Hulu in May of 2020.
Catherine and her closest allies, including her maid Marial (Phoebe Fox), adviser Count Orlo (Sacha Dhawan), and General Velementov (Douglas Hodge), conspired to overthrow Peter in the first installment of The Great. Season 2 will continue this major theme since they have plenty more plots and schemes to concoct. Charity Wakefield, Gwilym Lee, Adam Godley, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Gillian Anderson star as Catherine’s mother, Johanna, in the second season.

Catherine’s pregnancy, which was disclosed at the end of season one and clearly teased, is also expected to be a significant storyline point throughout the second season. This is expected to have a personal and political effect on Catherine and Peter.
While her pregnancy may offer her with some protection from Peter and possibly another coup attempt, the nature of the show suggests that this could change at any time. The following images should serve as a teaser until all 10 episodes of The Great season 2 are released on Hulu on November 19.
