Schitt’s Creek Makes History At Virtual Emmys With Seven Wins In a Row

The cast of Schitt’s Creek reunited for the first time for Emmys 2020 and they won the show already. They united in person for the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards.

Even if the award show was virtual, the cast dined together side-by-side. “Tonight, some Schitt’s Creek cast and nominated team members have been able to gather for an #Emmys event in Toronto, adhering to Ontario’s COVID-19 guidelines,” the show’s Twitter page announced ahead of the event. 

They also announced that everybody in attendance has tested negative for COVID-19 and was in isolation before. The cast came forward and posed in front of a white floral wall.

Eugene Levy, who played the character of Johnny Rose on Schitt’s Creek wore a navy suit, black shirt, and grey tie. He paired the outfit with circular glasses and black shoes. His son, Daniel Levy, who played David Rose on the show was donning a grey suit jacket, matching tie, and skirt. 

Catherine O’Hara, who played Moira Rose, was wearing black from head to toe. She opted for a black gown which was complemented by a sparkly, long-sleeved top, boots, and handbag. And Annie Murphy, who played Alexis Rose, donned a black ensemble as well.  She sported a sheer, black top under a black blazer and paired it with black pants and sneakers.

Catherine was the first one to bag an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. This was followed by a win from Eugene, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

“Oh my goodness, this tent’s on fire!” -Daniel

“How cool is it that Eugene has a microphone in his bedroom?” O’Hara joked to start her acceptance speech. She said she will forever be grateful to Eugene and Daniel Levy for giving her the opportunity to play a woman of a certain age and still be herself.

Eugene thanked his wife and gave a shout-out to his children as well as fellow co-stars of Schitt’s Creek. “As a dad getting to work on camera for six years with both my kids, Daniel and Sarah, ‘Hi, honey.’ Such a joy,” he said. “I love you both and could not be prouder.”

But that was not the end for Schitt’s Creek as it went on to win awards. The show also won the Emmys for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

“Holy cow. Oh my goodness, this tent’s on fire!” Daniel said after taking home the award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. He thanked his dad, Eugene, who gave him the platform even when he did not have any experience in writing. The actor continued, “Which saying that out loud right now feels like a wild choice on your part, but I am very grateful for it.”

The cast was even more thrilled when their other co-star, Annie, also bagged an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. This came before the show won comedy categories with its Outstanding Comedy Series win.

Annie said the last six years have been the best time for her as she was working on the show. She expressed how proud she feels of the cast, crew, and writers. The actress said she cannot believe Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara are her friends. She continued, “I’m so proud to be a part of a show that stands for love and kindness and inclusivity and acceptance because those four things are things that we need more than ever right now.”

Schitt’s Creek’s Big Win

Not only that Daniel also won the Emmys for Writing For a Comedy Series, Directing For a Comedy Series along with Andrew Cividino. The onscreen family joined costars Noah Reid, who played David’s love interest Patrick Brewer, and Karen Robinson, who played Ronnie Lee, ahead of the night’s festivities.

Schitt’s Creek was already celebrating its win for both Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Contemporary Costumes, earlier this week. “CONGRATULATIONS to John Comerford and Lisa Parasyn for winning Schitt’s Creek’s FIRST EMMY for Outstanding Casting For a Comedy Series!! So well deserved!!!” Eugene, 73, wrote via Twitter on Thursday, September 17.

He also went ahead to congratulate Debra Hansen and Darci Cheyne for picking up Schitt’s Creek’s second Award. The series produced and acted in by both father and son was nominated for an impressive 15 Emmy nominations for its sixth and final season.

Daniel announced that the show will be ending back in March 2019. He told his fans how grateful he was for the opportunity o create such a well-received show. The actor also addressed the “rare privilege” of getting to put an end to his show, in the industry. “We could never have dreamed that our fans would grow to love and care about these characters in the ways that you have,” the statement read.
