Patrick Dempsey’s Behaviour Caused PTSD Among Grey’s Anatomy Cast?
Patrick Dempsey’s departure from Grey’s Anatomy in 2015 was one of the most heartbreaking things for fans of the show. His character was killed off but the shocking story behind it includes allegations against the actor.
His untoward behaviour is said to be the reason which drove the actor out of the show. Patrick used to play Dr. Derek Shepherd on Greys for the first 11 seasons. He was lovingly known as McDreamy on the show as well as among fans. But recent claims made about him can shock fans.
Author Lynette Rice states in her upcoming book titled, How To Save A Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy, about the alleged reason behind Patrick’s departure. It was all stemmed from the actor’s reckless behaviour back then which led to his character being killed off. Lynette interviewed more than 80 members of the cast and crew of the show.
This included both cast and crew from the past as well as the present. The former Executive Producer James D. Parriott revealed that there were HR issues that weren’t sexual in any way. The producer had produced the first two seasons of Grey’s before departing from the medical drama only to return on Season 11. This was to supervise the death of Shepherd from the show.
As per James, Patrick was terrorizing the set and few cast members had all sorts of PTSD with him. The actor has always been described with adjectives like so gracious and lovely”, “charismatic” and “personable”. However, Brooke Smith who once played Erica Hahn credited him for standing up for her when she was fired from the show.
Ellen Pompeo Was Tired Of Patrick Dempsey’s Complaints
In season 11 of Grey’s Anatomy, the show started revolving around him and everything went south from the point onward. As per the producer, Patrick and Shonda Rhimes found it difficult to even see eye to eye. The actor himself was done with the show and wasn’t as inclined to continuing the show.
James explained, “He had this hold on the set where he knew he could stop production and scare people. The network and studio came down and we had sessions with them. I think he was just done with the show. He didn’t like the inconvenience of coming in every day and working. He and Shonda were at each other’s throats.”
There were also reports about Ellen Pompeo and Patrick not getting along as per another EP. Ellen was allegedly tired of hearing the actor’s complaints about how long he has been on set. He would only calm down when he knew others on the set had been working longer. Even Patrick was interviewed for the book and he admitted to being frustrated with long shoot hours which kept him away from his family.
Shonda drew the line when she witnessed the behaviour herself and gave the network an ultimatum. She said if he does not go, she will go and nobody really wanted him to leave because he was the show along with Ellen. James revealed, “Patrick is a sweetheart. It messes you up, this business.”
There were three possible storylines for accommodating his absence but they decided to kill his character off. “It was ultimately decided that just bringing him back was going to be too hard on the other actors. The studio just said it was going to be more trouble than it was worth and decided to move on,” Parriott said.
