The Batman TV spin-off in the works from director Matt Reeves
HBO Max has lined up another new series in addition to its massive streaming library.
It is a spin-off of Matt Reeves’ forthcoming Batman movie. The series will be an expansion of the world of Batman. It will be set in Gotham city and will be a police procedural set. The series is yet to be named but sources say that it is referred to as Gotham Central or GCPD.
The casting of the show is also not confirmed. We do not know if we will see Robert Pattinson’s Batman or Jeffrey Wright’s Detective James Gordon. According to a press release, the story will revolve around the examination of crime in Gotham city. It will work to launch a new world of Batman on multiple platforms.
The series will be written and produced by Terence Winter. He will be joined by Reeves and Batman producer Dylan Clark, Daniel Pipski. It will also include Adam Kassan as an executive producer along with the rest of them. Rafi Crohn will be co-executive producing the series. Warner Bros will produce the series in association with Reeves’ production company 6th & Idaho.
HBO Max describes the series as, “Reeves is creating for The Batman feature film. And will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City. Ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham.”
Reeves said in a statement that this is the best opportunity to explore Batman in-depth. And it will have details that only a long-form format can afford. He continues saying that working with Terence is an absolute dream.
A police procedural will certainly be suitable with Reeves’ vision on the Batman world. The film itself is highly focused in the detective part of the ‘World’s Greatest Detective’ aspect of Batman.
Reeves also said he went in deep to revisit all his favourite comics. He said there will be no continuation of Christopher Nolan films. Reeves said he will be trying to find a way to make it Batman, new and cool according to him.
The announcement of the series is the first TV project to come from Reeves multi-year deal with Disney, Fox, to Warner Bros. The chief content officer of HBO Max, Kevin Reilly, has also commented on the new procedural series. He said that their collaboration with Warner Bros. and DC allows them to elaborate and connect with fans across these brands. Kevin further said that this is Batman like most audiences have never seen before.
Recently HBO Max made a declaration stating it will be closing and releasing the long-fabled ‘Snyder Cut’ of Justice League on the service. HBO Max embodied the DC Universe series Doom Patrol.
However, J.J. Abrams has been tagged to create a new DC superhero TV series particularly for HBO Max based on Justice League Dark. This comes from WarnerMedia’s 2019 exclusivity deal with Abrams’ Bad Robot company. It refers to produce a series of HBO Max shows, with Justice League Dark joining period crime drama Duster. Along with Overlook, a series set in the world of Stephen King’s The Shining.
More details on Reeves’ forthcoming spin-off series will be announced as they become available.
