The nominations for the 54th annual Country Music Association Awards are in! To kick things off, Luke Combs and Carly Pearce announced several leading categories for the biggest night in country music. Which takes place from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
Singers Ingrid Andress and Gabby Barrett presented the remaining categories on CMA’s YouTube and Facebook live-stream.
Leading the pack this year is Miranda Lambert with seven nods in total, including in the coveted Entertainer of the year category. Lambert now has a record-breaking total of 55 nominations, making her the most-nominated female act in the history of the show. The record was previously held by Reba McEntire, who just earned her 51st nomination. Lambert appears in the night’s top categories, including Female vocalist of the year and Album of the year, for “Wildcard.”
For the first time in a decade, two women, Lambert and Carrie Underwood, have been nominated in the Entertainer of the year category. Which has long been dominated by male artists. The last time two women were nominated for CMA’s highest honor in the same year was 2010, when Lambert and Lady A were both among the nominees.
Behind Lambert is fellow Entertainer of the year nominee, Luke Combs. Who continues his streak of success as one of country music’s biggest streaming artists with six nominations. He’s also up for Male vocalist of the year, Album of the year for “What You See Is What You Get.” A double-nod in Song of the year for “Even Though I’m Leaving.” And the Carly Pearce and Lee Brice duet he co-penned, “I Hope You’re Happy Now.”
Following Combs is Maren Morris with five nominations. Like Lambert, she’s vying for Female vocalist of the year and Song of the year. The two unite in the musical event of the year category with “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.” Lambert’s collaborative song featuring Morris, three-time nominee Ashley McBryde, Tenille Townes, Caylee Hammack and Elle King.
Pop star Justin Bieber is a newcomer to the group, scoring three first-time nominations for his collaboration with Dan + Shay on “10,000 Hours.” Gabby Barrett, Ingrid Andress and Jimmie Allen are also first-time nominees.
“This year’s nominees represent the passion, creativity, and hope our world could use more of these days. From record-shattering milestones to reaching across genre lines. These finalists are outstanding examples of the craft and camaraderie country music holds deeply,” said Sarah Trahern, CMA chief executive officer.
“As we navigate the coming months and look to properly honour our nominees and the community. We are committed to delivering the safest and most memorable live television experience our artists, creators, and fans could ask for. We cannot wait to reveal our two incredible CMA Awards hosts in just a few weeks. And we look forward to celebrating country music this November!”
The 2020 CMA Awards will broadcast live on Nov. 11 on ABC. The show will be held in Nashville and will be executive produced by Robert Deaton. Alan Carter is the director for the show and David Wild is the head writer.
