Zimbabwe get over the line this time to level the series 1-1

Zimbabwe vs Sri Lanka, 2nd ODI (D/N), Pallekele, Jan 18 2022, Zimbabwe tour of Sri Lanka

Match Result: Zimbabwe won by 22 runs

Player of the Match: Craig Ervine

Match Report: Zimbabwe came close in the first game, they get over the line in the second game. What an effort from them despite not having much game time in the pandemic. They chose to bat, put a challenging total on the board, came out brilliant with the ball and stunned the hosts. After their performance in the first ODI, many thought Sri Lanka would chase this down with ease, but this was a different surface and was more helpful to bowlers. Chatara bowled a gem of a nip-backer to hit Kusal Mendis’s top of off stump. A dream scenario for any fast bowler.

Muzarabani and Ngarava chipped in to get Nissanka and Chandimal quickly. Three wickets down inside eight overs. Asalanka was determined to counter-attack but Madhevere got a dream offie’s dismissal – again ball hitting top of off. Their bowling coach was so proud over it, smiling heartfully. Sri Lanka played a batter short, so it was Shanaka at No. 6. They needed their captain to contribute and well, all we can is that he rose to the occasion. So the series is leveled at 1-1 with a game on Friday.

Dasun Shanaka | Sri Lanka captain: When I went to the middle, myself and Kamindu didn’t look at the scoreboard. The ball was coming on nicely in the first half of the game and then it was skiddy. We should come with better plans in the next game. Not much pressure. We didn’t bowl well at the start. Unfortunately our top order didn’t click. Hopefully both facets will do well next game.

Craig Ervine | Zimbabwe captain | Player of the Match: With the seamers it (the pitch) was quite easy to bat. Vandersay got a bit more purchase. Certainly more in it for the spinners today. Our seamers did so well upfront getting those early wickets. We are very happy with how it (team combination) looks. We will back them to come and do the job in the third game. We were under a bit of pressure to come out and win today. I will take my hat off to the boys for showing the determination to win today.
