Willem Dafoe, Tom Holland’s co-star in Spider-Man: No Way Home, has praised him. Since its release in mid-December 2021, No Way Home has been a phenomenon, becoming Sony’s highest-grossing film and sitting in eighth place on the list of all-time highest-grossing films. This has all been accomplished in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Holland reprises his role as the MCU’s friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man/Peter Parker and faces villains from Sam Raimi and Marc Webb’s previous Spider-Man flicks in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), and, of course, the return of Dafoe as the Green Goblin are among the legendary antagonists.
Dafoe was the first-ever villain in the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, and as a result, he became a very memorable figure. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, he reprised the role, instantly becoming the film’s most anticipated and fan-favourite enemy as he pushed Holland’s Peter Parker to his limits. With the desire that he be permitted to perform his own stunts, the skilled Dafoe returned as the Goblin. Dafoe’s Goblin also changed up his appearance, first coming in full Goblin regalia before deciding to go maskless for the remainder of the film.
In a recent interview with GQ, Dafoe discussed his latest projects and praised Holland in the process. The actor has recently become a social media darling, participating in a fashion YouTuber’s New York video in which he is shown flaunting his style choices, which has since gone popular on TikTok. Dafoe acknowledged the positive response to his comeback as the Green Goblin; as well as passing some of it on to Holland; praising the British actor’s dedication to his superhero character.
Many have tipped Dafoe to play Batman’s infamous adversary The Joker
“He deserves special praise for Spider-Man 3.0 Tom Holland. I admire greatly his discipline and his commitment to the role. And physically, he was incredible”
Many performers have applauded Holland’s Spider-Man performance in the past, but praise from Dafoe himself must be a huge compliment. The seasoned actor has been performing for over 40 years and has established himself as a powerful presence in Hollywood. Whether playing Nuidis Vulko in the DCEU’s Aquaman or Thomas Wake in the Oscar-winning The Lighthouse; Dafoe has proven his versatility and talent in his acting career; earning him a place among the industry’s most well-known performers.
Many have tipped Dafoe to play Batman’s infamous adversary The Joker; with fan art recently posted on social media demonstrating how well he matches the part. Nightmare Alley, directed by Guillemero del Toro and based on the 1946 novel of the same name, is Dafoe’s next endeavour. He’ll star opposite Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, and Bradley Cooper, among others.
Uncharted, in which Holland plays Nathan Drake with Mark Wahlberg’s Victor Sullivan, will be released next month on February 18. Despite their age disparity, both Dafoe and Holland have had an enormous impact on the film industry; and seeing them square off in Spider-Man: No Way Home was clearly not only a thrill for fans; but also for the great Dafoe himself.
