What Does Coldplay x BTS' My Universe Music Video Mean?
By: Christy Mathew
BTS and Coldplay'c collaboration saw them going gloriously sci-fi in the music video. The video was released on September 30 as the two bands were seen in a futuristic reality where music is forbidden.
Such high-concept and genre-driven music videos are popular in the K-Pop industry but is not that common in the Western music videos. My Universe embraces rebellion common in the space opera genre. We can see three bands —BTS, Coldplay, and a fictional alien supergroup called Supernova7—who live on three different plans defy the ban to create music together via hologram.
They are hunted by The Silencers who have banned music and enforce no-music status quo. The song is easy to interpret as it is a love song about a relationship that transcends boundaries. The music video has a theme of people coming together despite the distance and differences. The three bands collaborate together to make something beautiful and special.
BTS is known for their beautiful voice apart from being one of the biggest K-pop groups out there. The band had contributed to a K-drama OST for V’s acting debut. Both Jin and V had sung the beautiful song, Event If I Die Its You for the show, Hwarang. They have released an album called BTS World OST as well.
Here, the enemy is not difference, but a mysterious, totalitarian force that has banned all music. This was personified by The Silencers which could be interoreted as societal prejudices that can sometimes keep us apart. it can also be interpreted as the oandemic made basic things of togetherness more complicated.
It doesn’t seem a coincidence that the fictional versions of BTS and Coldplay featured in this video are unable to be together in person. It can be interpreted as representation of the forced physical distance that has defined the past few years. This is why it seems inspiring when they come together.
While the visuals of “My Universe” may be intentionally futuristic, the ability to play together across vast space is not. Just last week, Coldplay and BTS performed as part of the Global Citizen Live event. The bands were in two different countries but cam together as one.
