Sorting Hat Tells Hogwarts Gossip In Colbert’s Harry Potter Reunion Parody

By: Christy Mathew

Last Friday night, Stephen Colbert’s Late Show featured a piece parodying the forthcoming Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts special; which will premiere on HBO Max on January 1. Original Potter cast members Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson will be interviewed; and reminisce about their experience filming the beloved franchise in this programme.

The event is being held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The next special follows the recent HBO Max Friends reunion special from earlier this year; which was a huge hit. Warner Bros. appears to have understood that they may profit from the reunions that many fans have waited for years.

Since the early 2010s, Radcliffe has been insistent that he does not want to be engaged with anything Harry Potter-related. He’s back in a way that many thought he’d never be again; thanks to an apparent change of heart. Harry Potter fans all over the world have been looking forward to the reunion since it was announced; especially now that three of the main characters have confirmed their attendance.

While many other celebrities will attend the reunion; one member of Hogwarts has yet to be mentioned: The Sorting Hat. Colbert’s parody, which was posted on The Late Show’s official Twitter account; centred on what the Hogwarts Sorting Hat would say if asked back for the reunion special.

In the fiction, the Sorting Hat is a talking magical artefact that rests on the heads of first-year students and determines which House their personality and skills best match. The Sorting Hat remarked about Dobby the house-elf not leaving Maggie Smith alone; especially when cocaine was involved, on The Late Show; which was not afraid to be vulgar.

The hat is also shown mispronouncing words and having a particularly difficult time pronouncing “Gryffindor“. Draco and Lucius Malfoy were singled out by the hat, which called them a not-so-nice name. Check out the video in its entirety below:

It’s fascinating to speculate on what type of rumours might have circulated among Hogwarts pupils. Colbert’s parody heightens the anticipation for the impending reunion special; which will be hosted by Helen Mirren. Fans will undoubtedly be hoping for at least some juicy set secrets or new stories from the Harry Potter stars next month.
