Jiri Prochazka dramatically chokes out Glover Teixeira to win light heavyweight crown in just his third octagon fight

Jiri Prochazka added to some history Saturday night with a thrilling submission victory over Glover Teixeira at UFC 275 in Singapore.

Prochazka (29-3-1), 29, came in as the favourite to win the title being the younger fighter over the older Teixeira (33-8-0), 42, but it turned out to be a battle that almost went the distance.

Prochazka used his striking in the first two rounds to good effect, forcing the champion Teixeira to look for the takedown, which he effectively did.

On the ground, Teixeira used control to land some effective shots but could not put the challenger away in the fourth round with an arm-triangle choke attempt.

It was in the championship rounds that fatigue set in for both fighters. In the final round, it looked like Teixeira would get the stoppage after a good striking combination backed up Prochazka.

He tried to follow up with an unsuccessful guillotine choke, but Prochazka revered the position and cinched in a rear-naked choke with 28 seconds left that forced Glover to tap.

With the win, Prochazka remains undefeated in the octagon and joins Lesnar by winning the title in his third UFC contest. Glover had his six-fight win streak snapped with the loss.

Prochazka and Teixeira earned Fight of the Night, while Jake Matthews, Zhang Weilli, Jack Della Maddena, Hayisaer Maheshate, and Silvana Gomez Juarez earned performances of the night. Each fighter earned a $50,000 USD bonus.

We also saw a retirement from one of the octagon’s most dominant champions as Joanna Jedrzejczyk retired after a tough loss to Zhang Weilli.
