VIDEO: Twitter comes down heavily after Ben Stokes claimed Shubman Gill’s catch

England’s Ben Stokes stirred up a controversy when his catch was ruled out by the third umpire in the third Test against India at the newly renamed Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The instance happened at the very beginning of the India’s first innings when Shubman Gill was on strike, facing veteran Stuart Broad under lights.

Stokes, who was standing at second slip when Stuart Broad found the outside edge of India opener Gill’s bat, appeared confident while claiming the low catch in the second over of the Indian innings in the post-tea session of the day-night Test.

The on-field umpires favour the English team and given the soft signal ‘out’ at the time of sending the decision to the third umpire. However, it was very much clear in the replay that the ball touched the ground when Stokes was picking the ball up.

The third umpire made a quick decision just after looking at one angle and decided that Stokes did not have anything beneath the ball.

The England camp was unhappy, with Stokes laughing sarcastically and Root, along with Broad, having a word with the on-field umpire. In the end, though, the correct decision was made.

Here are some reactions from social media around the incident.
