India vs South Africa, 3rd T20I (N), Visakhapatnam, June 14, 2022, South Africa tour of India
Match Result: India won by 48 runs
Player of the Match: Yuzvendra Chahal
Match Report: India finally make a comeback in the series. It was a do-or-die match for the Men in Blue and they stood up to the challenge with great character. This makes the series a lot more interesting as a loss for the hosts would have meant the remaining matches being dead rubber. India have ended their seven-match losing streak against the Proteas. They would be looking to carry this momentum into the next match. With the kind of dominating performance they have come up in the third T20I, experts believe India are now an evenly poised side.
Temba Bavuma put India to bat first after winning the toss yet another time. Pressure was high on Ruturaj, who had not delivered on the international stage for a long time. His opening partner, Ishan Kishan, has been among the runs. Both started off brilliantly, giving India just the start they needed in a tense match. Both played risk-free cricket, finding gaps and relying on timing the ball.
Pretorius was the pick of the South African bowlers, as he was economical and also struck two wickets. In reply, South Africa were in trouble right from the beginning. Slow run rate added pressure on the batsmen. They looked to release by freeing their arms but found fielders. Credit must be given to the Indian bowlers as they came into this match with some solid preparation. Chahal was awared the Man of the Match for his super spell, which turned the match in India’s favor.
The 97-runs partnership between the two was broken by Maharaj. Shreyas Iyer never got going, and he failed to make the most of the lifeline that he got. South Africans were sloppy in the field, with a fair few amount of catches being dropped. Hardik Pandya played the role of finisher to perfection, as he hit four boundaries in his inning of 31.
Yuzvendra Chahal, Player of the Match: I bowled a lot of sliders and bowled quicker in the previous matches. Today, I changed my seam position. Spinning and getting the ball to dip are my strengths. Today I tried to get it to turn and bowl slower. I tried to bowl to my strengths, I focused on that. When batters try to reverse-sweep, it becomes tough for the bowlers. But now I have a second plan and set fields accordingly.
Rishabh Pant: The execution was spot-on from the bowlers and the batters. We were 15 runs short, but we weren’t thinking about that. Bowlers did a fantastic job for us. In India, spinners play a big role and there is pressure on them, when they come off nicely then matches like this happen. When you get a good start, it’s difficult for a new batter to come in and go big straightaway. We lost too many wickets. We’ll look to improve in the next match. We have to make sure that we finish the game with a bigger margin.
