RR vs RCB, Qualifier 2 (N), Ahmedabad, May 27, 2022, Indian Premier League

Match Result: Royals won by 7 wickets (with 11 balls remaining)

Player of the Match: Jos Butler

Match Report: Qualifier 2 was one of the best contests of IPL 2022. RCB had entered this match high on confidence after crushing LSG in the Eliminator. With momentum on their side, RCB looked favorites to win this match. Their players were not in the best of form, but the way they had entered the Qualifier 2 was nothing short of magic. But Butler had other plans. Butler scored his fourth century of IPL 2022 in this match. One that was well-paced and showed that Butler is perhaps the best T20 batsman in the world as of this moment.

Batting first, RCB never got going, losing early wickets and scoring at a low rate. Patidar, who stepped up in the Eliminator, was the highest run-scorer for RCB once again. But this innings was not as impactful as the previous one. The right-handed batter needed support from the other end, but wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. Prasidh and McCoy were the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets each.

In reply, Rajasthan Royals cruised along in the chase. It was clearly the Butler show, with the English batsman scoring more than 65% of his team’s runs. It was a typical Butler innings, slow at the start, but rapid afterwards. Siraj was expensive once again, and no bowler succeeded at slowing down Butler.

Jos Buttler | Player of the Match: I came into the season with very low expectations, but with a lot of energy and excitement and to be stood here now and have the season I had with such a great team and get us into the finals is incredibly exciting. I had a tournament of two halves. I had some really honest conversations with some close people around me, Kumar Sangakkara and Trevor Penney. I was feeling a bit of pressure, getting distracted and I was trying to suppress it and it was only until a week ago or so I opened up inside and talking about that made me feel a lot better going into Kolkata and that innings gave me the confidence that helped today.

Sanju Samson | RR skipper: It was tough (after a loss in the last game), but we are used to bouncing back in the tournament. In IPL it’s very normal that you go ups and downs throughout the tournament. We lost a few games, we knew how to come back and we did really well. The wicket was a bit sticky and was helping the fast bowlers a bit, it had really good bounce and was easier playing the spinners. We closed the innings really well, having DK and Maxi at the end we knew what they could do but having belief and composure in our skills is what got us through.
