India vs New Zealand, 2nd Test, Mumbai, Dec 3 – 7 2021, New Zealand tour of India
Match Result: New Zealand need 400 Runs to win. India need 5 wickets to win.
Day 3 Report: India are the clear favorites to win here. They were the favorites from the moment New Zealand were bowled out for 62. But India just strengthened their lead in the 3rd innings with the score of 273. Mayank has made a strong case of being picked in the squad for South Africa. He scored a fifty that saw some high-flying shots too. But perhaps the most enjoyed batting was that of Axar Patel. 4 Sixes in a score of 41. That was very quickfire and he made sure that the Indian scoreboard took a huge leap without the loss of overs.
New Zealand, much like their first innings, lost early wickets. Ashwin is just ruthless to left-handers. And his record against Tom Latham is too impressive. He dismissed New Zealand skipper yet again and has a tally of 8 dismissals in 9 innings against him. Ross Taylor didn’t even manage a combined total of 50 runs in 4 innings in this series. Daryl Mitchell scored an efficient 60. But he threw away his wicket.
Daryl Mitchell: “The way Agarwal played in both innings for India, he put pressure on our spinners and he set the template for how I personally wanted to try and go about, taking on the Indian spinners today. Disappointing to not still be out there and kick on but it was nice to get a partnership going. It’s a pretty challenging surface, the ball’s definitely turning there with your name on it.
It’s just about trying to find ways and put pressure back on the bowlers at certain times and stick within your strengths. Ultimately that was my downfall today, but it was nice to spend some time out in the middle. You are constantly adapting to the what the surface and what the opposition is trying to do to you. That’s the wonderful game of Test cricket, they are constantly throwing things at you and you’re doing the same thing back. You just got to keep doing that for long periods of time and keep trying to win every small battle.
It’s obviously a tough situation we’re in, we’ve got another two days to bat now. It was just about going out and play our game, keep trying to put pressure back on their bowlers for as long as we can and hopefully that will put us in a position come day five where there might be a chance. Obviously it’s very challenging.”
Mayank Agarwal: “This innings was all about grit and determination. I haven’t changed much, just tried to stay side on, but it’s more mental than technical. For my batting, if I don’t attack I’ll get stuck, so if I don’t put Ajaz under the pump, he will keep bowling in good areas. The Indian domestic circuit is tough, and the years anyone spends there helps them. It’s hard and the experience and learnings you get is phenomenal, and I’ve carried that into international cricket. We will look to pile on as many runs as we can tomorrow and put the pressure on New Zealand.”
