Video of All 12 Super Sixes Hit in IND v WI 1st T20I Match Kolkata

India vs West Indies, 1st T20I (N), Kolkata, Feb 16 2022, West Indies tour of India

Match Result: India won by 6 wkts

Player of the Match: Ravi Bishnoi

Match Report: Clinical all-round display by India in all three departments. Chahar and Harshal Patel were a little expensive, Chahal being relatively better but Bishnoi was on another level. It was hard to believe that he was a debutant in the match. He executed his variations perfectly, with no nerves. Rohit Sharma, the captain, was full of praise for him in the post match presentation. By his words, we can understand that India are looking to hone him for the World Cup. Venkatesh Iyer bowled one over, was pretty economical. Pooran was the best batter of Windies, and he made sure that his team got to a competitive total.

But 157 was never going to be enough against such a strong batting lineup. Rohit Sharma got going, looked good during his stay at the crease. His partner, Ishan Kishan, was at the opposite extreme end. He scored 35 with a miserable strike rate. The center of attention, Kohli, was striking the ball in the sweet spot of the bat. But got out playing a big shot. Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer took the responsibility of getting Team India beyond the finishing line.

Suryakumar Yadav: Should have finished that off a little early, wanted to be clinical. Happy with the win and we can take a lot of confidence from this game. Restricting them to that score was a great effort from the bowlers. With the bat we were not clinical and it’s something we can learn from. Bishnoi is a very talented guy which is why we drafted him into the squad straightaway. We see something different in him. He’s got lot of variations and skill-set with him.

Rohit Sharma, India skipper: I’m happy to have that kind of challenges rather than not having players available and not in form. We were very clear with Shreyas and we told him we want that option going into the World Cup. Guys do understand what the team wants and all these guys are professionals and they do understand that team comes first. Once everyone is available it’s something we need to sit down and understand.

Looking at the dew, Rishabh and me decided to hit square because the outfield was very quick. I like batting anywhere, but today it was different and I badly wanted to finish the game. Glad to win and stay not out. Very important for Venkatesh, when he came in the difference was just eight runs, so I told him there was no need for any fancy stroke. Just asked him to play good shots and good cricket and really happy with the way he played. Their spinners bowled beautifully. It turned with bounce and gripped. With heavy dew it was very difficult for them to grip it and it was advantageous for us.

He can bowl at any stage and it gives us a lot of options to rotate the other bowlers. Very happy with his first game for India and he’s got a bright future and it’s just about us now on how we use him. Someone like Shreyas Iyer is sitting out, very hard on him not making it to playing eleven, but we needed someone to bowl in the middle which is why we couldn’t get him in. It’s always nice with that kind of competition going around and a lot of the guys are missing out as well.
