Rajasthan Royals vs Delhi Capitals, 34th Match (N), Wankhede, April 22, 2022, Indian Premier League

Match Result: Pending

Match Report: There are two types of batsmen – Jos Butler and the rest. This is what the situation is right now. Jos Butler is batting in a league of his own. He is playing in a league of his own. Kohli’s fans are worried whether he might beat Kohli’s all-time record of 973 runs in a single IPL season. Butler has already scored three centuries and two fifties in seven games. It has been pure domination by the English batter. And the way he is playing, we can only expect more from him.

Batting first, Royals got off to a flying start with their openers again laying a solid platform for the rest of the batting department. Devdutt Padikkal got his first fifty of the season, and his first one for the Royals. He played a supporting role while Butler was the aggressor. Butler has mastered the art of building an inning. He uses the same template in every match and it works wonders for him. He started off slow, got his eye in and then fired. He hit 9 sixes and 9 fours in his inning of 116 runs. Also, this century got him to the elite list of batters who have scored two consecutive centuries in IPL. There’s only two of them – Dhawan who did this in 2021 and now Butler.

Sanju Samson’ cameo was  worth applauding. On the back of his quickfire 46, Royals got to the highest total of the season. Looking at the bowling chart, none of them returned impressive numbers. All the bowlers were hammered for sixes and fours. Of course, it is a pitch best suited for batters but still, the numbers shouldn’t have been this bad. Royals look favorites to win this match as Capitals are losing wickets at regular intervals.

Devdutt Padikkal: Wankhede is always one of those wickets, as a batsmen if you are set you can go after the bowling. Initially Jos was going well and I was just trying to give him strike as much as possible, once we got into that rhythm we were just feeding off each other. We both knew the bowlers and areas we can target, we were looking to do that and waited for the opportunities. It’s a treat to watch him (Jos Buttler) bat and I hope he continues to score a lot of runs for us. I felt 180-190 is par and with the kind of bowling line-up we have, we should be able to defend that. I can’t compete with him right now (on the six-hitting of Buttler), he is just too good at the moment.

Trent Boult: It’s different for certain individuals, but I am enjoying my time here with the Rajasthan Royals. It’s a great bunch of guys and they get away from cricket nicely between the games. We are very comfortable and the spirits are pretty high in the group, a few wins here and there help the team morale. My game is about trying to pitch the ball up and get the ball swinging as much as possible. The biggest challenge is to adapt the conditions here which are pretty foreign for me. (When the ball is not swinging) I try to use my pace and also try to use the slower ones otherwise. It’s going to be a good challenge as I’ll be up against Prithvi and Warner, so I’m waiting for it.
