After Mysterio outs his identity and frames him for murder in the mid-credits of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Holland’s Peter Parker seeks the help of Doctor Strange to cast a spell that will erase everyone’s memory of his dual lives as the titular web-slinger in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The sorcerer ultimately botches the ritual and opens the doors to the multiverse, bringing villains from various realms into their existence, forcing the two Avengers to confront these foes and return them to their worlds before everything comes crashing down. Spider-Man: No Way Home has won acclaim from reviewers and audiences alike and has become Sony Pictures’ and the web-slinger’s highest-grossing film.

Holland discussed Spider-Man: No Way Home’s unexpected Aunt May death scene in a recent interview with Marvel to discuss the smash film. Holland believes the sequence will definitely gut people who don’t see it coming, as the character is “integral” to the heart of his web-slinging trilogy.

Here’s what Holland had to say:

“The relationship between Peter and May throughout these films has been really integral to the heart and soul of the story. This scene kind of seemingly comes out of the blue, like no one expects this to happen. It’s going to be really, really hard hitting for people [seeing the] movie.”

Aunt May’s death in Spider-Man: No Way Home left many audience members speechless, owing to the fact that the character had never met her maker on screen in any prior incarnation.

Uncle Ben, who has been mentioned in passing in previous MCU films but never thoroughly discussed, was instead given that position. His iconic phrase, “With great power comes great responsibility,” would be delivered by Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May in her final scene, in which Dafoe’s Green Goblin kills her just beyond of Parker’s reach with one of his pumpkin bombs.
