The Suicide Squad Is HBO Max’s Most Successful DC Release, Says James Gunn

The Suicide Squad, according to director James Gunn, is the best-performing DC film on streaming.

The film, which is a sequel to the 2016 film of the same name, has a mainly new band of DC villains (along with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn) causing havoc while on a crucial mission on the island nation of Corto Maltese.

Bloodsport is played by Idris Elba, King Shark is played by Sylvester Stallone, Thinker is played by Peter Capaldi, Peacemaker is played by John Cena, and Colonel Rick Flag is played by Joel Kinnaman.

Most Successful DC Release

On August 6, 2021, The Suicide Squad was released in cinemas and on HBO Max simultaneously, at a time when pandemic-era viewers were especially hesitant to return to theatres for anything other than Marvel films. The Suicide Squad underperformed at the box office and was widely regarded as a disaster, especially by the standards of a big-budget superhero film, despite HBO Max’s lack of clarity about their streaming numbers. The Suicide Squad did well at the box office, grossing $167 million worldwide, but on a $185 million budget, it appeared to be a failure.

A fan on Twitter voiced their wish that The Suicide Squad finds a large audience on HBO Max, sparking a startling response from James Gunn. “TSS is already the biggest DC production ever on streaming & HBO Max,” he said. This hasn’t been confirmed by the service, but if it is, it means that the streaming figures are likely strong enough to compensate for the film’s poor box office performance, possibly even outpacing the epic, fan-requested Zack Snyder cut of 2017’s Justice League.

Take a look at Gunn’s post below:

Some could say that the existence of the new HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker, starring John Cena in a reprise of his character, shows the film’s success on streaming. However, as the film’s release date was delayed due to the epidemic, that show was made during the outbreak and completed filming in July 2021, a month before The Suicide Squad premiered. It would be cheaper costly to air the series rather than bury it.
