The creator of Riverdale Season 5 teased a Betty and Jughead storyline

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator of Riverdale, hinted what’s in waiting for Betty and Jughead in season 5. Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) were love interests in season 1 of The CW’s blockbuster series, which takes a darker look at Archie Comics’ iconic characters.

The fanbase has affectionately dubbed the pair “Bughead” because of their many ups and downs on the show. Rivderale recently had a seven-year time leap, during which the dynamic duo, as well as other star-crossed lovers Archie (KJ Apa) and Veronica (Camila Mendes), grew separated.

Betty still cares about Jughead, as she teamed up with Tabitha Tate (Erinn Westbrook) to track him down in the latest episode. Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke to ET after the episode aired about what’s in store for the once-lovebirds, teasing recovery.

The following is what the creator told the publication:“We love that Betty is anxious about Jughead and that she’s collaborating with Tabitha to track him down. And there’s one sequence, I believe it’s in episode 516, that’s almost like a mini-opera in and of itself. Betty and Jughead are alone, and it’s wonderful to watch Lili and Cole in sequences together; their connection is apparent. So we’ll see more of Betty and Jughead, and while that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll get back together right away, they were a significant part of each other’s lives, and it’s fantastic that we’re getting back to that now.”

The teases aren’t particularly stunning, but if fans read between the lines, it’s obvious that Aguirre-Sacasa sees Betty and Jughead as the show’s final two characters. It’s refreshing to see the Riverdale writer be so open about that reality. Bughead, on the other hand, has a job to do.

The former mystery-solving partners, unlike Archie and Veronica, have a lot more wounds to heal. The forthcoming “mini opera” scene sounds like it will be a good place to start. After all, Betty and Jughead started out as friends, so if they can restore their friendship, they’ll have a strong base on which to reestablish their relationship.
