Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is now in the works

Another Star Trek show, this time centred on Starfleet Academy, is in the works at Paramount+. Following the end of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005, the television side of the franchise went underground for several years.

Only the launch of CBS All Access (now Paramount+) and Star Trek: Discovery in 2017 gave the series a new lease on life. Since then, several Trek shows have been created for Paramount+, with more on the way. Discovery is the group’s lone veteran, with season 4 set to premiere later this year.

In addition to Discovery, Paramount+ will bring back Star Trek: Picard for a second season in 2022. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which wrapped filming last month, and Section 31, a long-in-development series starring Michelle Yeoh, are among the upcoming new shows.

Lower Decks and Prodigy are two animated shows in the franchise, with the latter premiering on Nickelodeon later this year. With so many shows in various stages of development, it’s no surprise that NBCUniversal and producer Alex Kurtzman aren’t slowing down.

Star Trek are currently in development

Kurtzman mentioned the Star Trek shows that are currently in development in an interview with The New York Times. Section 31 is one of them, as is a previously unannounced Starfleet Academy series.

Other than the fact that it will be aimed at a younger audience, no other information was provided. When asked how many more Star Trek shows might be in the works, Kurtzman simply stated, “I think we’re just getting started. There’s just so much more to be had.”

Nonetheless, there will be plenty of Star Trek content for the near future. Kurtzman’s comments imply that there are additional projects in the works that he did not want to reveal just yet, and to be fair, the Star Trek universe is vast, with numerous storey possibilities.

There could be a multitude of new places to discover. At the same time, one can only hope that shows set within the franchise do not overrun Paramount+. For the time being, there’s a lot to get excited about for Star Trek fans, and that’s something special.
