Sophia Carson Addresses Backlash Faced By Her Netflix’s Purple Hearts Film

Netflix’s Purple Hearts film is facing severe backlash after its release. Viewers are criticizing the show for having dialogues in the script that are “Sexist”, “misogynist” and “racist”. Many Twitteratis are calling out the show makers for allowing such kinds of comments in the film.

Sofia Carson, the main lead actress of the film broke the silence on this issue amid backlash. Let’s have a look at what the actress has to say about it. In the film there is a dialogue by Nicholas Galitzine who plays Luke, he says “This one is to life, love and hunting down some godd**n Arabs baby.” as he raises a toast.

Even when Sophie Carson’s Cassie calls out the comment Luke passed, the moment is forgotten after then and never gets addressed again. People are disappointed by this remark, calling it a subtle way to pass on racist and misogynist comments.

Sofia Carson and director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum have finally addressed the Criticism the film is facing. In an interview with Variety the director defended the film by saying, ” I hope that people understand that in order for characters to grow, they need to be flawed in the beginning. So very much intentionally created two characters that had been bred to hate each other.”

She further adds that the characters are made flawed intentionally because “in order for the red heart and blue heart to the kind of turn purple, you have to have them to be kind of extreme.”

Sophie Carson says that the reason why she loves the film is that it’s much more than a love story. It is like two different worlds that are made to hate each other. She further adds, ” Through the power of love, they learn to lead with empathy and compassion and love each other and turn into this beautiful shade of purple.”

Further addressing the backlash she says they tried to accurately portray both the characters. She continues, ” What I think I’ve learned to do as an artist is separate myself from all of that and just listen to what the world is feeling and reacting to with the film.

It’s overwhelming for her that so many people are felt seen and comforted by this movie, that’s what all the filmmakers and artists want.
