According to Sony insiders, despite recent announcements, no plans for a new MCU Spider-Man trilogy; following Spider-Man: No Way Home have been confirmed. The forthcoming Spider-Man film will be Tom Holland’s third solo excursion as Peter Parker.
It will be directed by Jon Watts (who has directed every Spider-Man film in the MCU) and will follow Holland’s Spider-Man, who made his Marvel Cinematic Universe début in 2016 with the release of Captain America: Civil War. This came after a lengthy procedure to reunite the character (owned by Sony) with his Marvel friends.
Spider-Man: Homecoming was released in 2017 and Spider-Man: Far From Home was released in 2019; with Spider-Man: No Way Home completing the current trilogy for the character. Although nothing is known about the general plot of No Way Home, some have speculated that the film’s multiverse-focused story may allow other Spider-Man actors from past series iterations; to join Holland on-screen.
It was unclear whether No Way Home would be Holland’s Spider-Man’s final adventure; but Sony CEO Amy Pascal indicated in a recent interview that there were plans to bring Holland’s Spider-Man back for another trilogy and continue the story.
With Spider-Man: No Way Home due to hit theatres next month, movie-goers are now focused on the future of Marvel and Sony’s partnership. According to THR, Sony officials have stated that there are presently no official plans for a new trilogy starring Holland as the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man; however, he will continue his engagement in the Marvel universe. Nothing concerning a new trilogy based on his persona has been announced as of yet.
Despite the fact that nothing has been announced, a trilogy could still happen. Despite the fact that nothing is “official,”; a new trilogy is still being touted as a viable possibility. Sony sources, on the other hand, are emphasising and reiterating that no trilogy has been planned as of yet.
This raises the question of whether Holland’s Spider-Man should have another solo trilogy when No Way Home is released. Although the character is definitely bankable, there is no shortage of other Marvel heroes that have been launched or will be introduced in the coming years. Instead of receiving his own trilogy; it’s not out of the question that Holland’s Spider-Man becomes a supporting character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; similar to how Marvel handled Iron Man in Phase 3. On December 17, Spider-Man: No Way Home will be released in theatres.
