KKR v PBKS, 8th Match (N), Wankhede, Apr 1 2022, Indian Premier League

Match Result: KKR won by 6 wickets (with 33 balls remaining)

Player of the Match: Umesh Yadav

Match Result: Umesh Yadav is ruling the IPL right now. His performances are superb. He is striking wickets in the powerplay. His speed is impressive too and he is showing that he is not just a bowler of the longest format. He struck the wicket of PBKS Captain Mayank Agarwal in the first over itself. Then came Rajapaksha who scored at a strike rate of over 300 for his 31 runs. That included 3 sixes. It felt like Rajapaksha might take his team to a huge score before he lost his wicket to Mavi. Livingstone did not play his usual style. He understood the game situation and stayed on the crease. No one really got going after that except Rabada. Rabada gave an important contribution to the team. He ensured that the bowlers had something to bowl at.

In reply, KKR did not have the best of starts. They lost veteran Rahane in the second over. Just when it felt like they were building a partnership, Venkatesh Iyer lost his wicket. Captain Shreyas Iyer looked good during his stay at the crease. He picked out gaps successfully and hit five fours. Rahul Chahar struck twin wickets in the seventh over. The match was in PBKS’s favor until Russell arrived at the party. And boy did he dominate! Russell scored an unbeaten 70 runs decorated with 8 huge sixes. The sixes were pure power and strength. Sam Billings played the supporting role and let Russell do his magic.

Shreyas Iyer | Winning captain: We were stunned by Punjab’s approach. We didn’t expect them to come so hard at us in the initial overs after losing an early wicket. But that’s what I looked to do as well. We got early wickets in the powerplay. My plan was to keep my best bowlers for their hard-hitters. And that’s why I kept Varun and Sunil for late. They made my job easy. They come out with their own strategies. They know what their plans are for the batsmen. They know what they are doing. To be honest, it was great to see Russell hitting. It was Russell Muscle. Umesh told me that he was getting older, but I told him that he was getting fitter.

Mayank Agarwal | Punjab captain: We didn’t bat well enough. We showed some real fight with the ball initially and then Dre Russ came in and got going. Credit to him for taking the game away from us like that. I think it was a 170ish wicket. We started off well but could not capitalize, there were a few soft dismissals. But it is fine as it is the start of the tournament. They (bowlers) pulled it back nicely for us with 4 for 50 we were in the game, but Russell took the game away. There were a lot of positives to take away.
