Kolkata Knight Riders vs Gujarat Titans, 35th Match (D/N), DY Patil, April 23, 2022, Indian Premier League

Match Result: Titans won by 8 runs

Player of the Match: Titans won by 8 runs

Match Report: Another win for Gujarat Titans and they are back on top of the table. It’s been a complete domination by the newly introduced franchise which no one expected. Halfway through the tournament and GT are just cruising through. Given they are being led by an inexperienced captain, everyone must have bet against them. But they are functioning well as a unit, with different individuals rising to the occasion every game.

Batting first, the Titans did not have the best of starts as they lost Shubman Gill early. Tim Southee, who replaced Pat Cummins in this match, struck early and gave the vital blow for the Knights. Thereafter, there was a solid 75 runs partnership between Veteran Saha and Captain Hardik Pandya. Pandya was the aggressor here, going after loose balls. His stroke against Varun Chakravarthy on the first ball itself was full of confidence and perfect timing. David Miller looked good for his 27 before he gave his wicket to Shivam Mavi. Rahul Tewatia failed to produce the same magic he has done in the past few matches.

But the highlight of the match was Russell’s solitary over that brought him four wickets. That’s how skilled Russell is. KKR’s death overs bowling was exceptional. In reply, KKR failed to chase down the target as the top four batters fail cheaply. Rinku Singh and Venkatesh Iyer did the job of rebuilding the inning. Russell was the top scorer for KKR. While he was on the crease, it seemed like KKR might chase down the target. But Ferguson’s brilliant catch put an end to a fine knock by the Caribbean. Shami and Rashid Khan were the pick of the bowlers, both accounting for two wickets each.

Hardik Pandya | winning captain: By the time we finish this tournament, I might lose all my hair (chuckles). It’s always important to close the games which we were very good at and the boys have stepped up and showed their character and backed their skills. We are backing them (opening combination) as a team and I know what kind of players they are and in the middle we are managing pretty alright and once they start clicking it will be a wonderful treat to watch. Hope everything (injury) is fine with me as well, I have three days before the next game and focus on the things I can control.

Shreyas Iyer | losing captain: Definitely the way we started in the powerplay while chasing and also the way we bowled in the powerplay as well (where the game was lost). We couldn’t have conceded that many runs when the wicket was doing a lot. The ball was nipping and the hard length was difficult to play. We lost it in the powerplay. I think 160-165 was a good score on this pitch, but we did really well to restrict them to under 160. The boys pulled it back really well after the powerplay with the way they came in and got the wickets.
