NewJeans, a five-member girl group formed by ADOR of HYBE Labels, made the best K-pop debut of 2022, without a doubt. With the release of the EP NewJeans in August 2022, the girl group made their big debut. The group, however, gained attention long before their debut when they unexpectedly released the pre-release single Attention. Fans responded positively to their unexpected entry into the K-pop scene with tens of thousands of positive comments. Their music video was influenced by the 2000s, and the likeable combination of R&B and pop sounds in their music helped NewJeans become a worldwide phenomenon.
Their first album became the fastest debut album by a K-pop girl group to reach 300M streams on Spotify, surpassing BLACKPINK’s album ‘Square Upʼ. Even though the group faced a lot of criticism for debuting minors and their controversial song “Cookie” they still managed to break a lot of impressive records. The group’s new single album “OMG” has taken their popularity to a new level.
“Ditto” Surpasses Dynamite
On December 19, 2022, NewJeans released “Ditto,” the lead track from their single album, OMG. The song became NewJeans’ debut entry on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 95, as well as the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number 85. The release day for OMG was January 2, 2023. With sales of 700,000 copies in its first week of release, it reached its highest position at the top of South Korea’s Circle Album Chart. The retro theme of the album was praised by reviewers.
“Ditto” (611) by NewJeans is now the song with the most Perfect All-Kills in history, surpassing “Dynamite” (610) by BTS. NewJeans is also moments away from becoming the girl group on Spotify with the highest number of monthly listeners, surpassing BLACKPINK. With these new achievements, NewJeans which consists of members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein has become the most popular K-Pop group at the moment.
