The 2nd round of the playoffs are going somewhat as expected with players giving their all on both ends of the floor. The title favorites, Phoenix Suns went up against the Dallas Mavericks in their homecourt. Both teams are at full strength and will be asserting their dominance from the start.
The Phoenix Suns went with a starting lineup of Chris Paul, Devin Booker, Mikal Bridges, Jae Crowder and Deandre Ayton. The Dallas Mavericks started with Luka Donicic, Jalen Brunson, Reggie Bullock, Dorian Finney-Smith and Dwight Powell.
With the opening tip, the Suns went strong as they went on a 9-0 run before being responded by Luka Doncic. Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton was toying with the Maverick’s defense as they were going on an in-and-out barrage. The Mavericks players were having a rough time getting themselves into gear with the exception of Luka Doncic. He went on to battle the Suns defense knowing that he is unguardable.
Continuously switching their positions, the Mavericks were getting the ball to Luka for him to do his magic. However, the Suns relentless offense helped them to grow their lead. They continued their onslaught entering into the 2nd quarter. But this time, the Mavericks were fighting back.
Motivated to see their ace go up against the Suns defense, the Mavericks role players were spacing the floor and scoring 3s. The Suns kept up their offense as they let Ayton do his work on the glass while the other players scored from beyond the arc. Hence, the Suns had the lead in the 1st half with a score of 69-56.
With the start of the 2nd half, the Suns and the Mavericks were distributing the ball well. But it was apparent that the Suns chemistry was better as everyone was getting touches on the ball. Led by Chris Paul it is no surprise that the Suns are this good. The Mavericks were moving the ball well too but their over reliance on the 3-point line was costing them valuable possessions.
The Suns had built a considerable amount of lead. They almost had more than 20-points separating them from the Mavericks. But, the mavericks weren’t the one to give up. Doncic went on a rampage as it appeared every shot of his were falling. They had cut down the lead considerably but could not get the job done.
For the Suns, Deandre Ayton led them in scoring with 25 points, 8 rebounds and a block. Devin booker chipped in with 23 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists and a block. Chris Paul had small output yet he put up 19 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block. Cameron Johnson came off the bench and lit up with 17 points, 5 rebounds and an assist.
Luka Doncic was basically unguardable as he ended the game with 45 points, 12 rebounds, 8 assists and a block. Maxi Kleber came off the bench and put up 19 points going 62.5% from beyond the arc. Dorian Finney-Smith put up 15 points, 6 rebounds and a steal.
Takeaways from Game 1
The Phoenix Suns emerged victorious in Game 1 with a scoreline of 114-121. Having homecourt advantage in Game 2 as well, the Suns will be looking to close the game to extend the series lead to 2-0. The Mavericks desperately need a win if they want to have an edge in the series. Jason Kidd will be making some changes so as to strengthen their interior. Let’s see what Game 2 brings.
