Pakistan win the first test by 8 wickets, Abid Ali leads from the front

Pakistan vs Bangladesh, 1st Test, Chattogram, Nov 26 – 30 2021, Pakistan tour of Bangladesh

Match Result: Pakistan won by 8 wickets

Player of the Match: Abid Ali

Match Report: Pakistan chased down the target of 203 quite comfortably, making a mockery of the target as they lost just the openers. Similar to the first innings, Abid Ali and Abdullah Shafique did majority of the work, following that 146-run first-innings partnership with a 151-run stand. Abid was plain unlucky not to get two hundreds in a Test when Taijul Islam had him trapped in front nine short of a century, but by then Pakistan needed just 22 to win, which Babar Azam and Azhar Ali knocked off with ease. Abid Ali has impressed many with the kind of responsible and flexible batting display he has shown in this test.

Pakistan began the day at 109 for no wicket, but the chase wasn’t as easy to score down as it seemed to many. In the first innings, Pakistan lost nine wickets for 111 runs, so Bangladesh would have been aware early wickets up top could bring the weak middle order into play. Abid and Shafique, though, ensured they didn’t make the mistakes of day three and didn’t give Bangladesh any chances at all, seeing off the first few overs cautiously before going after them.

It was the 39th over, with Taijul bowling to Abid, that Pakistan made their move. The batter skipped down the wicket to lash Bangladesh’s best bowler through midwicket, before dispatching another one over the ropes. He went on to make it three in three with a punch through cover, and Pakistan were on their way.

Shafique wasn’t the aggressor but picked up a couple of boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking. Just after the 150-run partnership was brought up, he missed a sweep that was set to flick off stump, bringing an end to Pakistan’s opening partnership and a dream debut for the 22-year-old.

Babar Azam | Pakistan captain: “The way Bangladesh played in the first innings that was really good but Shaheen and Hasan were outstanding. That’s the beauty of Test cricket that it allows you to make a comeback. We didn’t have much time to prepare for the Test but we gave our best. I am really pleased with the way Abdullah Shafique built his innings. Abid Ali was outstanding, scoring tough runs to pull the team out from difficult position.”

Mominul Haque | Bangladesh captain: “I think we lost in the first one hour on both our innings. In first innings, Mushfiqur and Liton stepped up. If we had got 100 more runs, it would have been different. We have to improve against new ball.

Abid Ali | Player of the Match: “Abdullah Shafique was making his debut, so we tried to stay on the crease, waited for bad balls and succeeded in putting those away. I had done well in the domestic cricket and carried that positive mindset here too. Abdullah played really well, I gave him more credit. He was outstanding and my best wishes are with him. I am a bit disappointed that I got out for 91 in the second innings but at the same time I am happy that we won the match.”
