Rumours of a WrestleMania 39 match between “The Tribal Chief” Roman Reigns and his cousin Dwayne Johnson continue to circulate. The main event will take place at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and the company will probably go all out for the Hollywood show. During the most recent episode of Young Rock, observant viewers may have noticed an easter egg that could give credence to a prospective matchup among Reigns and Johnson.
Parts of the series are set in the future, when Johnson is running for the presidency in 2032. During these future sequences, viewers caught a glimpse of a trophy case stuffed with The Rock-related wrestling memorabilia. The top of this trophy case housed three WWE title belts: the classic WWF title that Johnson held during Attitude Era, the WWF Intercontinental Championship, as well as the WWE Universal Championship, which Roman Reigns currently holds. This would not only imply a match, but also that Rock defeated Reigns in the Young Rock timeline.
With Reigns’ dominant run in WWE over the last few years, in addition to the long-term plotline based on his blood line, a match against The Rock will indeed make a lot of sense, both economically and in terms of storytelling. The only question is whether Johnson is willing to return to wrestling now that he’s not only a big film star but also an operator of the XFL, which will begin its season in February. Whatever occurs, it will only be a matter of time once fans find out, as WrestleMania season approaches.
WarGames fight at Survivor Series
No one in WWE’s talent hierarchy is higher than Roman Reigns these days; Head of the Table isn’t just a clever nickname. For several years, Reigns has been the focal point of WWE creative, and that hasn’t changed under Paul Levesque’s creative leadership. Being in such a position carries some clout, and according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Reigns used some of his creative clout in choosing two of his peers to collaborate with on his long-term Bloodline storyline Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens.
Nevertheless, a spot among Owens and Reigns during last weekend’s WarGames fight at Survivor Series caused some backstage tension between the two. Whereas Reigns was upset about an unexpected moment and the injury that resulted from it, everything appears to be on track for all parties moving forward. At this point, it appears likely that Owens would then confront Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship possibly at the Royal Rumble and Zayn will be just as engaged, with his emotional ties to both Reigns and Owens playing a role in how things play out.
