No Way Home’s Ending Was Different Before Surprise Actors Signed On

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME AHEAD!!!

The previous Spider-Man cast members, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield inspired the third act, according to the screenwriters of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Spider-Man: No Way Home, directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, is the third part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man trilogy.

The blockbuster picture has already shattered records inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the most pre-sale tickets since Avengers: Endgame, as well as surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the greatest December opening of all time.

Prior to Holland’s Spider-Man adaptation with Sony and Marvel Studios in the MCU, filmmaker Sam Raimi launched the Spider-Man series with the 2002 film Spider-Man, starring Tobey Maguire. Following the success of Raimi’s acclaimed Spider-Man trilogy, Sony revived the franchise in 2012 with The Amazing Spider-Man; starring Andrew Garfield in the iconic role of the web-slinger for two films.

Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the screenwriting team behind Spider-Man: No Way Home; spoke with THR about how Maguire and Garfield created the concepts and characters for the film’s final act. Despite the fact that Garfield and Maguire were given the script at the last minute; after secretly signing on to the movie they were able to seamlessly transition into their parts. In addition to inhabiting their parts; McKenna mentions how Maguire and Garfield were able to elevate their roles in order to aid Holland’s Peter in his quest for morality. Below is Sommers’ and McKenna’s response:

There’s a crucial, moral moment that they help him get through in the climax of the movie

“SOMMERS: They had thoughts, and it was really interesting and helpful to see their thoughts. No one knows the character as well as — or gives as much thought to the character; — as someone who has to then embody it and sell it. It’s always valuable to hear what the actor is thinking. It definitely shaped what we did.

MCKENNA: They had great ideas that really elevated everything we were going for and added layers and an arc; and we really actually started honing into the idea that these two guys were really helping Tom’s Peter on his journey to becoming who he ends up becoming. There’s a crucial, moral moment that they help him get through in the climax of the movie. So much of that was brought by Tobey and Andrew’s ideas; and shaping of what they thought their characters could bring to this story.”

Many fans have been waiting for Maguire and Garfield to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home; since the first trailer was released. To their amazement, both actors returned to the big screen to reprise their titular roles; collaborating with Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man to close the multiverse breach; by sending back their respective versions of prior Spider-Man foes.

Given their expertise portraying the eponymous roles; it’s no surprise that the screenwriting was changed when Garfield and Maguire entered the field; bringing insight and suggestions for the team-up scenes, as well as adding more background and worth to their characters. The final act gave their characters some emotional closure; especially Garfield’s version, whose quest was short-lived and ended in two instalments. With the film’s commercial success, many fans have been clamouring for Garfield to return for a third movie of The Amazing Spider-Man.

Knowing that Garfield and Maguire were granted a creative licence to embody their parts; and propose their views to the screenwriters; in order to change the conclusion of the picture may lead to a greater appreciation for their return appearances and engagement in the film; which has captivated many hearts. Holland recently recounted the fraternity he had intuitively formed; as a result of their common experience and kinship as wall-crawling heroes. With the introduction of the multiverse and the post-credit scenes in Spider-Man: No Way Home; Garfield and Maguire may return to reprise their title roles in the future.
