Meanwhile, in North America, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which led all films for the third week in a row and is already among the highest-grossing pictures of all time, brought Hollywood’s year to a close with more fireworks at the box office. Despite all of the celebrations for No Way Home, the film industry enters 2022 with plenty of reasons for both optimism and concern, following a year that saw overall ticket revenue double that of 2020, but still trail below pre-pandemic rates.
The majority of movie theatres were closed at the start of the year, but they closed with a bang at the conclusion. The weekend box office for Sony Pictures’ Marvel sequel No Way Home was expected to be $52.7 million, bringing the film’s three-week total to $609.9 million. In North America, that ranks 10th all-time. It has grossed $1.37 billion worldwide, making it the 12th highest-grossing picture in the world, surpassing Black Panther.
No Way Home, Tom Holland’s third independent picture as the web slinger, boosted the box office recovery that began last spring when US theatres reopened following a year of COVID-19 closures. Marvel films dominated the turbulent year, with No Way Home, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Black Widow accounting for the top four films of 2021.
According to statistics firm ComScore, the North American box office in 2021 was $4.5 billion. That’s a 60 percent drop from 2019 — before masked moviegoers, social distancing, and virus variants like the omicron, which is already on the rise.
