Lucknow Super Giants vs Mumbai Indians, 26th Match (D/N), Brabourne, April 16, 2022, Indian Premier League
Match Result: Super Giants won by 18 runs
Player of the Match: KL Rahul
Match Report: Batting first, LSG put on a huge total on the board. Captain KL Rahul joined the party in style as he struck a century. His third one in IPL coming in his 100th IPL match. It was a special innings especially under the scorching heat. KL was simply remarkable in building the inning and showed that he can make a comeback from anywhere. He took a jump from 21st to 2nd position in the orange cap race. Manish Pandey too got among the runs which is a great sign for LSG. He scored a smooth 38, playing the supporting role to perfection. Bumrah bowled brilliantly but failed to strike a wicket.
In reply, Rohit Sharma again fell for a cheap score. ‘Hitman’ has not delivered for Mumbai Indians in a long time and tonight was no different. Dewald Brevis played a fierce knock of 31 but lost his wicket going for another big blow. There were handy contributions from the next three middle-order batsmen. But in a chase of 200, a big innings from a batsman is required and there was no such. Avesh Khan was the best bowler of LSG with three wickets to his tally at a decent economical rate.
Six consecutive defeats for Mumbai Indians. Zero points on the board. This has officially been Mumbai Indians’ worst start to a season yet. Two teams in the past had this dubious record and they both ended at the bottom of the points table. Misery for the 5-Time Champions. They have not figured out the best combination and it seems like it might be too late. This time, it was Lucknow Super Giants who took advantage of the out-of-form Mumbai Indians and thrashed them by 18 runs.
KL Rahul | Player of the Match: Yeah, special day, special hundred, was a good pitch and wanted to make it count. Got a few boundaries away early, haven’t got the amount of runs that I’d have wanted, haven’t got the team to the kind of start that I wanted, wanted to cash in on this good pitch. Day games are a bit different, but dew does play a factor in the night games, it’s unpredictable as well. We have defended really well, the bowlers have really come to the game, that’s something we can take forward going ahead. Bowling first, we’ll have a clear plan, that’s something we can take away from bowling first. At times, we have lost a couple of wickets and it’s hard to come back, but we have done so at times, and that’s something which bodes well going ahead.
Rohit Sharma: Hard to point out one particular situation, when you are chasing a total we need big partnerships, something we failed to do today. There’s no particular reason to it, we try and put team before the individual. They bat quite deep and it is important to hold your key bowlers towards the back end. We always try and keep Bumrah for the back end and it didn’t seem to work out. He bowled pretty well but the others just need to pull up their socks a little bit. Every game we play is an opportunity, we try and think what our best playing XI which is best suited for the particular conditions and particular team. We lost 6 games now, we are trying to understand what our right combination is, but it all depends on the opposition that we play.
