She revealed that she went into it naively and she did not grow up knowing much about the royal family. Meghan said, “I went into it naively. I didn’t grow up knowing much about the royal family. It wasn’t a part of the conversation at home. It wasn’t something that we followed.”
The duchess was then asked if she did any research after she started dating Prince Harry. She denied doing any research as she shared she has never looked up her husband. Meghan further added, “I didn’t do any research. I’ve never looked up my husband. I just didn’t feel the need to.”
The former actress revealed that she never fully understood what it meant to be working as a royal. Meghan and Harry had officially stepped down from their roles as senior royals last year. it was their desire to have a normal family life that played a role in their decision which shook everyone.
Meghan further revealed that her sister-in-law Kate Middleton made her cry in the days that led up to her wedding. The duchess talked about the tabloid stories which included one that she allegedly made Kate cry. Meghan said, “the narrative with Kate, which didn’t happen, was really, really difficult and I think that’s when everything changed, really.”
Meghan Reveals Kate Made Her Cry
The former actress further revealed what happened as she shared that Kate made her cry. She clarified saying she is not talking about it to disparage anyone. The Duchess revealed that the week of the wedding was hard as Kate was upset about something. However, Meghan reveals she owned up to it and apologized.
Meghan said, “No [I did not make Kate cry]. The reverse happened. I don’t say that to be disparaging to anyone, because it was a really hard week of the wedding and she was upset about something but she owned it and apologized and brought me flowers and a note apologizing, which is what I would do if I knew I hurt someone, to just take accountability for it.”
The duchess further added as she shared her shock that six or seven months after their wedding, the reverse came out in the world. She shared that she would never have wanted to come out about her. The former actress revealed that she protected that from ever being out in the world.
Meghan did not reveal what exactly was said to her by Kate that made her cry. However, she did admit that the issue was about the flower girl dresses. She shared, “A few days before the wedding she was upset about something – the issue was correct about flower girl dresses – and it made me cry and it really hurt my feelings.”
The former actress further revealed that she always valued independence and has been outspoken. She said that she has advocated for women to use their voice. The duchess revealed, “I’ve always valued independence. I’ve always been outspoken, especially about women’s rights, and that’s the sad irony of the last four years, I’ve advocated for so long for women to use their voice.”
Duchess Says She Was ‘Silenced’
“And then I was silent,” the soon-to-be mother of two said before Oprah asked: “Were you silent, or were you silenced.” Meghan responded, “The latter.” She further revealed that when Meghan and Harry started dating she was given a very clear directive from then. The duchess was told to always say, ‘No Comment’, whenever asked about their relationship.
She further revealed, “That’s my friends, my mom and dad. We did it, I did anything they told me to do.” The Suits alum recalled thinking that she will be protected by the royal family.
Meghan said, “That was really hard to reconcile because it was only once we were married and everything started to really worsen that I came to understand that not only was I not being protected, but that they were willing to lie to protect other members of the family.”
She further shared how they were not willing to tell the truth to protect her and Prince Harry. The Duchess was asked about her equation with the Queen. Meghan shared that it is hard for people to distinguish the two. She explained, “It’s hard for people to distinguish the two, because it’s a family business right, there’s the family, and then there’s the people that are running the institution, those are two separate things.” The Duchess shared it is important to be able to compartmentalize as she revealed that the Queen has been always wonderful to her.
According to a source from the palace, by the time of Archie’s birth, the royal couple knew they were going to hit the exit. The interview also comes after Buckingham Palace confirmed that Meghan and Harry will officially not be returning to their royal roles.
Duchess Reveals Seemingly Racist Comments
Meghan further opened up about her son Archie being denied to a royal title and royal protection. She shared that there were concerns and conversations about how dark his skin will be when he is born. The duchess shared their was a palace decreed that said Archie will not have any title. This, according to her, is a move which is “”different from protocol.”
The former actress revealed that they did not want him to be a prince and that they weren’t going to give him security. Meghan shared, “we have in tandem the conversation of, ‘He won’t be given security. He’s not going to be given a title.’ And also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”
Oprah was astonished as she asked Meghan further as she refused to answer saying the revelation will be too damaging.
