Match Review: Los Angeles Lakers VS Denver Nuggets, April 3, 2022

The Los Angeles Lakers met the Denver Nuggets for the 2nd time this season. Their previous meeting was a loss to the Lakers. Entering into this match, the Lakers are in a must win situation as they have sunk to the 11th seed in the West. With LeBron James out of the roster, the Lakers have their work cut out for them.

The Lakers started with a roster of Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook, Malik Monk, Dwight Howard and Avery Bradley. The Nuggets started with their regular lineup of Nikola Jokic, Aaron Gordon, Monte Morris, Will Barton and JaMychal Green.

Game Summary

The game started with the Lakers pushing the ball on the offense. They were showing their need to win by supplying Anthony Davis the ball who worked on the Jokic at the interior. The Nuggets were not giving up on the possessions either as they were not allowing the Lakers to widen the gap. In the 1st half the Lakers were trailing 61-62.

The 2nd half was almost a mimic of the 1st half, but Russell Westbrook was stepping up to the plate as he was slashing into the Nuggets defense and scoring at will. It was a back and forth affair as although the Lakers were scoring, but their defence were becoming shoddier with passing time.

That reached to the point when under 3 minutes to go, the Nuggets went on a 11-0 run on the Lakers and took the lead. The Lakers could not cover the gap and fell to the Nuggets.

Box Score

Nikola Jokic took the leadership role as he put up 38 points, 18 rebounds and 6 assists. Aaron Gordon supported Jokic well and put up 24 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Will Barton also pushed the offence with 25 points. With Jokic being put on check, Monte Morris took the playmaking role as he dished 10 assists.

Anthony Davis took the reins as he put up 28 points, 8 assists and 9 rebounds. Russell Westbrook gave 27 points, 7 assists and 10 rebounds of his own. Carmelo Anthony scored 17 points off the bench. However, that is the issue for the Lakers that they do not have the proper team chemistry among their players.

The Lakers lost 118-129 to the Nuggets, making it 2 losses for them in the regular season series. With only 4 games away, the Lakers chance of the post-season run looks far away from their reach let alone a title. It seems like the Lakers have lost hope in themselves and as a fan that is really sad to watch.
