Kelly Clarkson Fights Lawsuit From Father-in-Law’s Management Company

Kelly Clarkson is fighting a lot of battles at once as she is in the middle of her divorce from her husband, Brandon Blackstock, she also has to deal with another case. The singer has to fight another legal battle which was initiated by her father-in-law.

The Voice coach responded back to a lawsuit filed against her by Narvel’s Starstruck Management Group claiming unpaid commissions. She argued that they violated the California Labour Code.

According to the lawsuit, Kelly owes more than $1.4 million in commissions. This is included on top of the $1.9 million that she had already paid. The singer has filed a labor petition and she argues they violated the code by ‘procuring, offering, promising, or attempting to procure employment or engagements’.

All of this is without initially obtaining a talent agency license. According to the petition, all agreements should be declared void and unenforceable. This includes a reported verbal contract that she agreed to pay the group a 15 percent commission of her earnings.

The singer also alleged that the group violated licensing requirements which was implemented by the Talent Agencies Act. The following list was the violations made by the group according to the singer; failing to submit a written application for a license, failing to write a formal talent agency agreement with her, demanding ‘unconscionable fees and compensation’ from her for ‘illegal services.’

Kelly also alleges that the group provided her with false information in regards to their engagements. She also states they failed to deposit a $50,000 surety bond with the Labour Commissioner. The musician also alleged that both Brandon and his father are unlicensed talent agents.

“We Have Four Kids. And Divorce Is Never Easy”

Meanwhile, Starstruck’s attorney, Bryan Freedman released a statement and claimed that the statement ignores the fact that Kelly herself had her own licensed talent agency. He continued: “While Starstruck Management Group provided talent management services on her behalf; it did so at all times that CAA was her agency of record.”

The attorney added that Kelly is attempting to avoid paying commissions that are due. He alleges that she is trying to achieve some perceived advantage in her battle for custody and divorce. The singer had filed for divorce from Brandon in June.

Kelly recently came back with her show The Kelly Clarkson Show and addressed her divorce. The episode was the premiere for season two of her show and she opened up about the ‘dumpster’ year that is 2020.

She told her audience a lot of things have happened in 2020, a lot of changes have happened in her life. The host said she did not see it coming. The singer filed for divorce back in June from her husband of seven years, Brandon Blackstock.

Her divorce has come as a shock to fans as well as their friends and family. Kelly explained what she is going through is hard because it involves other little hearts and not just hers. She said, “We have four kids. And divorce is never easy. And we’re both from divorced families so we know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts.”

Kelly Feels Grateful To Have A Musical Outlet

Kelly assured her fans and viewers that she is okay because a lot of people have asked her that. She explained that she is using her songwriting skills as a coping mechanism, which has helped her since she is a kid. “My mom told me to start writing and that’s actually how I get my feelings out,” the 38-year-old said.

The singer said she would not be talking about her divorce too much but she might incorporate it in her music. She added that music has always been her outlet to get her through difficult times. The host said she has been listening to a lot of music and she has also been writing a lot of music.

Back in June, Kelly filed for divorce from Brandon after nearly seven years of marriage. The pair shares two children with each other, 6-year-old River Rose and 4-year-old Remington. Brandon already has two kids from his previous marriage.

In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Kelly Clarkson revealed that she does not want to go into detail about her divorce from Brandon Blackstock. The singer described herself as an open person; however, she says she will not truly open up about the divorce because there are kids involved.

She said, “I think that I will navigate a way in which to be open and honest about it eventually; probably via the show, and it’ll probably, I’m assuming, happen organically when someone says something in conversation or something. It definitely wouldn’t be planned.”

However, Kelly feels grateful to have a musical outlet to express her feelings. She revealed that she told her therapist how she has no idea how someone deals with a big change, like a divorce, without an outlet.
