Kangana Ranaut Seeks Withdrawal Of Defamation Case Filed Against Her By Javed Akhtar

Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut has gone to the Dindoshi Magistrate’s Court in Mumbai seeking an annulment of a writ petition and warrant by the Andheri Magistrate’s Court against her. It was filed by veteran Javed Akhtar.

The plea was filed on March 10 and will be heard by the additional sessions court on March 15. The case is being re-assigned to another judge, and will return to court on March 10.

What Is The Complaint?

Javed Akhtar has filed a lawsuit against Kangana Ranaut following an interview of hers on Republic TV.

According to reports, Ranaut’s statements hurt Akhtar’s reputation. The music star says his name was unnecessarily dragged about in the tragic death of the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

He also said that the video interview got a lot of views on the channel’s websites and even on their YouTube channel. It is reported that this discussion has been republished by other major news platforms.

Reports further state that Akhtar has sought cognizance for the offence of defamation committed by Ranaut and punishable under the Indian Penal Code.

Other Developments

On February 1, Andheri Municipal Magistrate RR Khan issued summons to Rananut to appear in court on March 1, 2021. Akhtar’s lawyers said that although the actress was in Mumbai, she did not pay attention to the call.

Meanwhile, Ranaut’s application has been filed under Section 397 of the Criminal Procedure Code which deals with  ‘calling for records to exercise powers of revision’.

Earlier, the actor had also approached the Supreme Court seeking to transfer four criminal cases against her in various Mumbai courts to Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. One of these four cases was filed by Javed Akhtar.
